According to The Times-Picayune, New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu (D) urged the council to take this action.
For example, one of the statues is of General Robert E. Lee, the commander of Confederate forces who is now depicted facing north “so that he never turns his back on his enemies.” Landrieu argued that this and other statues need to be removed from their current locations based on what they mean to New Orleans today.

Once again, why do blacks somehow think they own intellectual rights to the US civil war? The Confederate flag isn’t about them. It’s about a trade war turned shooting war, and solidarity of the south. Slavery was a side-note.

I think we should just turn the rest of the country over to them.
It’s really simple. All of the whites moved to Metairie, Kenner, Slidell, the North Shore, and Weswego and Gretna. Whites stayed in Uptown and the Garden District but New Orleans is overwhelmingly black.
If you move don’t expect those that fill the void to respect your heroes.
