CINCINNATI -- Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred shared a vision of the game Tuesday that could ultimately include more than 30 franchises.
Manfred, appearing at a Baseball Writers Association of America luncheon at the All-Star Game in Cincinnati, said he's open-minded about the possibility of MLB expanding for the first time since the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Rays came on board in 1998.
"Maybe one of the reasons I got this job is, I'm bullish on this game," Manfred said. "I think we are a growth business, broadly defined. And over an extended period of time, growth businesses look to get bigger. So yeah, I'm open to the idea that there will be a point in time where expansion may be possible."

Actually the last thing baseball needs is more.
Is he stupid? They need to kill 6 teams and 60 games. Baseball suffers from a lack of talent and lack of compelling reason to watch any particular game.
And Nascar should add more races.
We were all spoiled by the steroids era.
Kill it all. I don’t need to be subjected to any more baseball or sports in general than I am now. Spouse is a sports addict sometimes.
Just what baseball needs is more small market teams.../ S
What MLB needs is revenue sharing before expansion...
As long as they are in this country. No agenda 21 in baseball.
Montreal, Charlotte, San Antonio, Portland, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City, northern New Jersey, Mexico City or Monterrey.
Why not Guadalajara?
Tampa Bay is averaging less than 15k fans a game, and you want to expand?!
And a AAA team in Calgary! (Though with Iran pumping oil, knocking $20 off per barrel, Alberta and Canada will have a difficult time ecomomically.)
I’m not sure about spoiled, but it sure helped hide the fact that there’s a drought of basic talent in the game.
There are already enough teams. Adding more teams will just mean taxpayers will have to pony up billions for new ball parks. I love the game but we have enough.
I agree they should shorten the season. This year, the World Series is scheduled to end in November. Its a roll of the dice as to what the weather will be like. Odds are there will be playoff and World Series games played in bad baseball weather.
Bud Selig once said he didn’t like November baseball . Yet he presided over expansion of the playoffs, multiple unneeded off days in playoff scheduling which stretched out the playoffs. As if he had no say in his own sport’s playoff schedule.
Hope not.
Only a few MLB stadiums are more than 1/4 full on most nights.
Not enough quality pitching available league-wide as it is.
They were planning to contract the sport by two teams before the 2002 season. Now expansion is being talked about??
You sure that this isn't 2005? Since MLB cracked down on steriods, offensive production went way way down.
great....more SPAM emails begging me to buy tickets for a weeknight interleague series between the Pirates and the Portland Pachyderms.
It wasn’t too long ago they were talking about contracting and eliminating teams. Now they’re talking about new ones?
