Kentucky governor's race now 'leans Republican,' group says

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Republican Matt Bevin is a slight favorite to win Kentucky's race for governor this year, according to a group that analyzes political races.

The Center for Politics, led by prominent political scientist Larry Sabato, on Thursday moved the race from "toss-up" to "leans Republican." Bevin, a Louisville businessman, faces Democratic Attorney General Jack Conway.

"The national Democratic brand is toxic in Kentucky," analysts from Sabato's Crystal Ball said. "Bluegrass Democrats will want to keep the race local, but the U.S. Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling created an opening for Bevin to connect Conway to national politics."

The lone poll in the race, conducted by Public Policy Polling in late June, showed Bevin holding a 40-38 lead -- a virtual tie. Democrats quickly attacked the poll's credibility.

Despite the change, the Center for Politics cautions that there's no clear favorite to replace the term-limited Gov. Steve Beshear.

"Bevin is far from a sure thing," analysts said, citing a track record of mistakes, such as attending a cockfighting rally and refusing to endorse Sen. Mitch McConnell in the 2014 U.S. Senate race. "If this weren’t the Obama era, we would be inclined to leave the race as a toss-up; at this point, we’re certainly not willing to go beyond a “leans” designation."

“track record of mistakes, such as .....refusing to endorse Sen. Mitch McConnell in the 2014 U.S. Senate race.”

Mistake? Really?

This might be the answer to a question I asked a couple of weeks ago.

Still too hard to tell. I know so many people here that constantly spout conservative ideas, and would die before they vote for a Republican. Low information voters who still believe Franklin Roosevelt is running the Democrat Party.

Yellow Dog Democrats, we call them.

All you have to do is point out how every Democrat changes their core principles the second they get enough votes.

51% of their voters in their district loves soldiers, Christianity, America, and guns then by jove, so do they! The second it drops to below 50% it can’t be thrown on the bus any sooner.

Will McConnell try to take him out?

anybody who would cast a vote for a democrat in either a national or state election, hasn’t been paying real close attention to the disaster that they have become.

In a (tiny) defense of SOME Democrats here, they are amazingly conservative. The present governor has openly defied and sued the Feds several times. Too bad that non-leftist, non-”big city” Democrats are a dying breed.

For example, Neil Boortz once described Zell Miller as the greatest Republican governor that Georgia ever had, and after living there while he was governor, I would agree. Heck, I voted for Miller.

The present administration is...uhhh...”not entirely popular” from Richmond deep into West Virginia, I’d say. You won’t see any Dems running for national office stumping there, I guarantee.

Trust me 2 of them are my inlaws. But say the word Republican in their house, and you’re liable to end up in a fist-fight.
Sadder is Mother in Law’s whole family was Republican. She switched to Dem when she got married because she was told it was her “Wifely Duty”.

Beshear lost respect from me when he wouldn’t support the county clerk from Rowan County.

That’s where I really get to scratching my head. This state is solid red in national elections, and almost solid blue in local and state elections.

Schizophrenia.

McConnell was running against a labor union pro-partial birth abortion WHORE democrat. So yes, not supporting him in the general election was a mistake, a big one.

And he made a lot of mistakes in the primary against McConnell, like being pro-cock fight and falsely implying he went to MIT. Which is why he lost so badly even though no one likes McConnell that much.

I’m glad he’s improved as a candidate. KY desperately needs a Republican Governor elected this year and then, next year, a Republican State House so he can actually get things done.

I didn’t think Bevin should be nominated cause I didn’t think he’d likely win but it’s wonderful that I was apparently wrong. Jack Conway is a dixie mafia scumbag. His corrupt party needs to be removed from power. Kick their asses, Matt.

No matter what anyone who hates McConnell tells you, the last thing he want is another democrat Governor.

In poor areas like that, patronage is everything. In Appalachia, the biggest employer in most counties is the state, closely followed by counties and cities. If the very existence of your family depends on knowing someone in order to get a job, sadly, you vote to keep that going. Of course, these days, this is true in places other than Appalachia...

A good number of Republicans who have run here have been at least as crooked as the Democrats and inept at it to boot. And, there isn’t exactly a deep pool of Republican candidates.

Yeah. Dems have ruled the state ruthlessly, forever, like the Mexican PRI, GOP has been very weak on the state level, hapless clowns.

That needs to change. Bevin, if he’s the man he says he is, could be a big step forward as Governor.

Oh man don’t I know it. Mrs. rikkir and I have been married 27 years, and the same guy has been County Judge Executive. Every time we would come back to visit, I would think, How in the hell is this guy still in office?”.

Useless waste of skin this guy is. Only time you see him is election season.

Got the colors backwards. The “Reds” are the Commie Democrats still holding Kentucky hostage at the state and local level. It’ll break soon, though. The Tennessee Reds held our state hostage for 140 years until 2011.

If Sabato thinks KY is “lean GOP” for Governor, that means it is closer to a safe victory for Bevin. He always errs to the left.

until 2011

???
Alexander and Ayatollah Corker aren't still holding TN hostage? The folks digging up Forrest aren't still holding TN hostage? I'd love to believe you, but looking at TN from outside I'm not seeing progress, I'm still seeing progressives. Nationally, I see all the fighting spirit of McClellan from TN politicos. I can only hope that when they dig up Forrest they'll let his fighting spirit escape by mistake. That (although not his policies) has been much missing. I'd love to see TN "all shook up."
