Stories about Black and Native American connections are rarely told within the narrow historical context shared in classrooms, history books and around family tables, but there are some details that reveal a more complete story of enslavement in the Americas.
In the 1830s, the enslavement of Blacks was established in the Indian Territory, the region that would become Oklahoma. By the late 19th century, when over half a million Africans were enslaved in the South, the southern Native American societies of that region had come to include both enslaved Blacks and small numbers of free Black people.
Though the harsh treatment of enslaved Africans largely paled in comparison to that of white slaveholders, Blacks still were treated as an underclass among Native Americas. The Five Civilized Tribes even established slave codes that protected owners property rights and restricted the rights of Blacks.
Here are the Five Civilized Tribes who held Black people as slaves.
Chickasaw
It is no surprise that the Native Americans knew the land well. Their knowledge became a lucrative business, especially for the Chickasaws who had keen navigation skills. They were hired by white slaveholders to traverse the terrain to capture Blacks who had escaped slavery.
The Chickasaw also held enslaved Africans of their own, and the system they established closely approximated that of white slaveholders on cotton plantations...

If you click on the link, get ready for one of those articles that make you go to a new page for each of the examples; and each page loads slowly through a flurry of pop-in ads and other matters. All only to learn a sentence or two about each tribe.
I clicked because the topic is significant to my family history. Always looking to learn a little bit more. No such luck.
This is not to denigrate the post, however.
The article mentions the Chickasaw, Creek, Cherokee, Choctaw, and Seminole tribes.
It is unknown as to why they choose not to mention all of the other tribes.
The indian (aka native american) tribes did not discriminate.
They would make slaves of blacks, whites, spanish, french, british, and each other.
They sold members of neighboring tribes and white people, too.
All I get is: America was founded on slavery and I'm an oppressed black person because of white supremacy. No one ever makes an attempt to explain the era and how slavery was the norm (as awful as it was). No one ever attempts to explain the slavery/genocide that currently occurs in the African continent almost daily.
Where is Obama? Where is the United Nations? Where are the bleeding heart socialists and feminists for the atrocities that occur every day in that part of the World? Where are they regarding ISIS while they enslave and butcher so many?
Where the hell are these "educated, tolerant, concerned, understanding f*cks who sit on the side-lines?
Those tribes were considered the “Five ‘Civilized’ tribes”.
Thanks for posting. My laptop can’t handle that site, unfortunately.
But I remember reading about American Indian slaveholders some time ago. And here’s an interesting old post that was on FR years ago:

“I ask why any Black should get reparations.”
The first slave owner in America was a black dude. So I guess they should just all pay themselves.
Why is the assumption that "slavery" only applies to blacks?
In my genealogy research, I discovered that Native Americans were also enslaved in that time period, and that is something that I never learned in school, and don’t believe is very well known.
Bump
Native Americans had slaves a 1000 years before whites arrived.. maybe 10,000 or more..
Native Americans did not work out as slaves. When they escaped, they were gone, baby, gone. And it was a very bad thing indeed to have a bunch of them on the inside when a bunch of them on the outside decided to attack.
I find it interesting that Native Americans referred to black people as “black white men.”
Some of the largest slaveholders in the South were black.
Seattle. a bastion of progressive mono thought, is named after Chief Sealth.
It is common knowledge that Sealth routinely raided near by camps of other tribes and brought back his captures to be used and sold as slaves. Somehow that is never raised when the topic of the Confederate Battle Flag comes up.
pretty soon you’ll also be asking why gay people are getting reparations- because they are looking for just that- demanding America pay them reparations
Yep- we’re heading down a very sick road-
Yup, the so-called Native Americans not only waged brutal war against various tribes before and after the white man, but they also took slaves in their individual conquests. The NOBlE Indians weren't so noble. They were savages that fought amongst each other.
Dances With Wolves was a cool movie that depicted the plains Sioux as peaseful people, as opposed to the Pawnee. The entire movie was a farce. The Sioux had many battles with other tribes as did the Cheyenne and Apaches in the west and were totally barbaric in their inter-tribal wars. They not only did the scalping thing, but enslaved their captives for years.
That said, the Indians got a raw deal from the Fedgov when they tried for a peace pact and then sent to reservations.
Oh well, it was a time in history of colonialization.
Slavery was still legal in the late 19th century in the South ? Who knew ?
Absolutely, as Africa still enslaves today. To the victor goes the spoils (the ole saying). That “European Culture” were the only slave holders in PC INCORRECT. Every civilization known to man (or pretty darn close) HAD SLAVES. The peaceful Native American tribes were the victims of the waring Native American tribes.
