Donald Trump Says McCain No War Hero: ‘I Like People Who Weren’t Captured’
The Daily Caller ^ | 7-18-2015 | Jamie Weinstein

Donald Trump escalated his feud with Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday in a way that probably wasn’t the most politically astute.

Appearing at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Trump decided to make the case that McCain is not a war hero. Asked by moderator Frank Luntz why he would call a war hero like McCain a “loser,” Trump replied, “He’s not a war hero.”

“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people who weren’t captured, I hate to tell you.”

McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War.

After hearing boos from the crowd, Trump backed off a bit: “Perhaps he’s a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”

Trump was referring to McCain calling the people who attended Trump’s recent immigration rally in Arizona “crazies.”

“This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain recently told the New Yorker magazine, speaking of Trump’s July 11 rally. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”

The Washington Post reported Friday that Trump is trying to recruit a primary challenger in Arizona to try to defeat McCain in his 2016 re-election bid.

McCain is a war hero and for that he deserves a modicum of respect...

As a Senator he deserves scorn and mockery and should be put out to pasture to graze the grass with his hefty daughter ...

His expiration date as a politician is far past "good until XXXXXX" date...

Trump should apologize and make a sizable donation to a wounded veteran cause...

End of story...

Something tells me Trump is scared he might win so he throws stuff like this out. Not good...

Not very smart of him. He may have done to himself what others could only have wished for.

Ask Ross Perot about John McCain the “war hero”.

Trump went too far on that one.

But, name some of the great POW war heroes from WWII, or Korea, or WWI.

You can’t, because hero status from most all wars was achieved in battle, not in a POW camp. But Vietnam was so divisive, and so dishonestly covered by the press, that combat heroes who were no doubt present in Vietnam were never given the recognition and publicity to become well known.

So, because of the immense coverage of the POW returns from Vietnam, some POWs became war heroes from that war. And because of his unfortunate political career, Juan has been one of the best known Vietnam POWs.

On the one hand, never disparage a POW for being a POW. Bad move, Trump.

Especially since when the chance to serve his country in the military came around Trump was nowhere to be found. I have a lot of complaints about McCain but he spent the first half of his life defending this country and going to war. That's not grounds for criticism, not by Trump or anyone else.

I can never forget how terribly McCain treated the families of POWs. It is on YouTube.

I wasn’t a big fan of Bush in ‘92 but Perot scared the hell out of me. While I considered him to be on the edge of insanity he was a popular figure. Sure he had a few salient points but you have to look at the full picture. Trump strikes me as being of the same cloth.

Trump should have not done this. I draw a sharp line between honorable McCain in Vietnam, and the political RINO he became later on.

A lot of brave, brave men were captured by the enemy in war. Many continued to serve on release but many never made it out. I honor all of their sacrifices for our nation.

If he wants to criticize McCain there’s plenty of idiocy to choose from from his years as an idiot senator.

He will have to walk that one back.

When has Trump ever walked a stupid comment back? He'll just attack anyone who dares criticize him for this.

I don’t like McCain’s politics but this is over the top. Trump is too much into personal shots. I don’t mind the political shots, but we don’t need elementary school taunts in a presidential candidate.

McCain has said that all Cruz supporters and Trump supporters are crazies.

Are you in one of those categories?

McCain was captured and capitulated, according to his fellow captives, before any torture was done to him.
His arm problem was the result of bad treatment for crash injuries, not torture.
This was not the first plane he crashed. He should not have been piloting any craft but was allowed to do so by virtue of his father and grandfather’s service.
He made tapes for the VC and, again, according to fellow inmates, was treated with great deference by his captors.
The man always has been an incompetent fraud.
By any objective standard he is a traitor, the son and grandson of great patriots.

He had better Apologize and say he “misspoke”.

It works for the Democrats every time it’s tried.

Remember, McCain not only called Trump names, he called anyone listening to Trump “crazies”. You know, his fellow Americans.

Benedict Arnold was a war hero too. It's a bad idea for anyone to make a blanket assessment -- "You served? Well, then I will worship you all the days of your life and I will attack anyone who ever criticizes you."

Trump has it basically right: McCain deserves scorn. He has harmed this nation. For decades. Having been a POW does not absolve the man of the guilt of being hurtful to American values.
