Republican presidential candidate Donald Trumps criticism Saturday of fellow party member and Arizona Sen. John McCain for being captured during the Vietnam War brought sharp rebuke from others in the GOP field.
He was a war hero because he was captured, Trump said at the Family Leadership Summit, in Ames, Iowa. I like people who werent captured.
Most of the 14 other GOP candidates, including some at the summit, immediately criticized Trumps remarks.
Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry tweeted that McCain is an American hero and that all U.S. prisoners of war deserve our nation's highest debt of gratitude and that Trumps comments are disgraceful.

Back in 2004, McCain denounced the ads from the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth as “dishonest and dishonorable.” In 2008, he took $70,000 in donations from them. He’s definitely an opportunist, and out for only himself.
But yet you came to the thread voluntarily after reading it all day........yeah your objection is weak at best.
“Trump did call McCain a War Hero”.
That’s where he got it wrong.
You know why?
They with Ed Meese setpped in to support McCain’s first wife when he split and divorced her to be with Cindy.
McCain says he fell in love with Cindy moments after he met here, tossing his wife and kids without concern.
Yep, Reagan wasn’t too pleased with him.
Perry tweeted.. Lolol
Real men dont tweet. Dontcha know?
Or ride a Harley or a horse for a photo op.
Or do they? :-/
A lot of Boomers didn’t serve if they had a college deferment. My uncle didn’t serve for that reason.
How is a young man getting an education a ‘weasel out’?
There were about 27 million men of draft age during the war. Of those, about 2 million served.
So are you going to go after the other 25 million men who didn’t go for one reason or another?
This is getting good. Trump doesn’t need one damn thing from Washington!
Look, I despise posting a duplicate post for the very reason I explained and nothing annoys me more than to have someone mention that it was already posted. The problem is I am very pressed for time, and seeing the article not having been posted before I will immediately try to get it on FR asap, not the least of which is that I've had articles posted 5 seconds before I did. So, I'l try to get it on line as quickly as possible.
So, to avoid this from ever happening, for everyone's benefit I pledge not only to check the search but will also quickly peruse down the columns to see if it has already been posted.
And if I lose a post because I took extra time to make sure it hasn't been posted yet, so be it.
The only thing the bravest man in the world wants when experiencing severe pain is an end to the pain.
I’m no McCain fan, but I remember reading that the communists tried to get him to take an early release, over others who had been there longer, but he refused knowing they would use it for propaganda, admiral’s son you know..
I tried to explain this in 2008 to some co-workers, black secretaries, strong Obama supporters, asking if they didn’t see any nobility in it.
They replied—and honestly, I’m afraid—that they thought he was “stupid” for turning the offer down.
Let’s not be as dumb as Obama supporters.
Having admitted that, now let me say—McCain has been a dripping, stinky douchebagge for 40 years.
Such a prejudiced post by you Seaplaner...
First, the no of young people drafted was just a small fraction of total no. of young people of draft age. There was no need to draft every young person of draft age. The military needs were not that big during Vietnam war.
Student deferment was a legal option available to all. The country needs college educated people along with military people.
Finally, there is nothing in the constitution which requires any presidential candidate to have served in the military.
You have something against legal options and the constitution?
McCain was an inept pilot, who managed to get shot down. That does not make him a war hero. To be a hero, there has to be evidence of above average bravery, sacrificing own life to save other soldiers, or above average destruction of enemy assets. Audie Murphy was a war hero. Red Baron was a war hero because he shot down 80 enemy planes. McCain was simply a war victim. Similar to any prisoner of war who is brutalized by their captors.
His quotes are always some effeminate, effete, pusillanimous,
LOL!
Bullseye.
You’re engaging in political correctness. The Left won’t permit anyone to criticise illegal immigrations just as the Right won’t permit anyone to criticise anyone who serve in the military no matter what they actually done
McCain was a POW, and a guy who kept crashing planes.
McCain has made it a point like Kerry of playing the hero card, while leaving our border open to terrorists.
McCain was one of the Keating five, IMHO he didn’t get jail time because people felt he served Jail in Hanoi and that was more than enough
McCain had the dirtiest campaign against JD Hayworth.
Lies, against JD, breaking Reagan’s 11th commandment every day. A campaign unbecoming and Officer and a Gentleman.
How the heck is getting captured a heroic act? Most nations treat their captured service members as if they were in a state of limbo...all pay and in grade promotions stop, etc.
McCain AFAICT was neither liked nor respected by his fellow POWs. I suspect that McCain acted as a POW in the same manner he now acts as a Republican (sic).
Who did he criticize for "serving"? All I saw was Trump putting the word "hero" in proper perspective. Many serve but very few are "heroes" unless you are trying a suck up.
From what I read, McCain did NOT get a promotion during his captivity. Read the article I posted twice on this thread.
