Donald Trump is soaring over his GOP rivals in a new nationwide Washington Post/ABC News poll conducted amid his controversial comments about Sen. John McCain’s (R-Ariz.) “war hero” status.

According to the just-released poll, Trump — with 24 percent support among likely Republican voters — holds a comfortable, double-digit lead over nearest competitor Scott Walker, who captures 13 percent support.

Jeb Bush, Mike Huckabee, and Sen. Marco Rubio round up the top 5 with 12, 8, and 7 percentage points of support, respectively. Sen. Rand Paul, meanwhile, sits in sixth place with 5 percentage points.

Trump (in some ways, sadly) will not be the nominee for 3 reasons.

1: He couldn’t take the cut in pay
2: In his current life, he can turn off the spotlight when he wants to. As Prez, he could not.
3: In his current world, people do what he says, when he says it. DC is an entrenched do-nothing, backstabbing land and he would hate that..

All that said, he has already re-molded the 2016 race for the much better. Every political candidate and consultant is saying, Holy Poop, Batman. This guy is telling 65 to 70 % of the voters what they ant to hear!!!

Anyone trying to “outsmart” him in the debates will get crucified.

From now on, more and more candidates will echo him.

Go Donald. With all respect; like Evita, he’s the best show in town. Like him or not (I do), he is all anyone here in DC is talking about.

Not comprehending this at all. With the exception of Jeb Bush (who is guaranteed to lose), Trump is probably the worst candidate that the GOP could nominate since he has foot in mouth disease and would almost certainly self destruct in the general election like Tod Akin or Richard Mourdock.

Not comprehending this at all.

Get your silver spoon out of your ass and START to understand. The liberal leftists and apparently folks like you who are worried about offending some Godless, hate-mongering, pro-Muslim, pro-corruption and everything-evil types have ruined this country. You better START to understand really quickly. If you disagree with the truth being told, you ARE the enemy.

I used to give to the VFW until I read here on FR that they made contributions to Barbara Boxer.

I don’t understand why Cruz is so low. But the good news is Jeb/Marco/Christie only add up to 22%, with not a lot of upside since they are well known already.

Poor Lindsey!!!

It's not as bad as it seems. They were looking for Linda Graham on the ballot.

Clearly insulting McCain is a losing strategy. :)

yes. His performance thus far has been awful. How dare he jeopardize the GOPe desire to put forth another losing candidate.

The Dems, the Gop, and the lame media all hate Trump, therefore I support Trump 100%. It’s just that simple.

I have always looked at comments calling Trump a buffoon or clown with suspicion. Let's just take his television show The Apprentice. What does he do? Well let's see, he mentors and guides entrepreneurial people. He preaches risk taking, competition, leadership skills, thinking big, and personal introspection when things go wrong. That hardly sounds buffoonish or clowinish.

There’s no way I would ever vote for Trump in the primary. And if somehow in some alternate universe this clown actually became the nominee . . . well, I can’t even imagine it.

This is a name-recognition and celebrity poll. Most people are not even paying attention yet, and won’t till at least this fall. Trump is a joke. There’s no way he’s going to be the nominee. There’s no way he’s ever going to be the president.

And “there are no American troops on Baghdad” said Baghdad Bob circa 2003.

Denigrating McCain because he was captured was a cheap shot. What he did for the US during the Vietnam war is not in anyway connected to what he has done in the Senate. Trump was using student deferrals to keep his sorry butt at home while McCain was flying combat missions, off of an aircraft carrier, over North Vietnam. It takes a special kind of person with courage to do that. Trump brags about his high selective service lottery number (his built in excuse) and that he didn’t have to serve in the military. If he had a low number he still would have scammed the system and stayed at home to party.

Trump can trash McCain over his senate record but he lost me when he went after McCain’s honorable military service.

They think that welfare and propaganda is all they need to get by.

It never occurs to them that most Americans want a real future. Not bread and circus.

It’s alarming the sheer stupidity of voters we have on our side.

If the GOPe came out for Coca-Cola everyone would be flocking to Pepsi.

If the GOPe is against it, the faulty logic is that it must be conservative. The biggest pile of BS I’ve heard.

Trump is a charlatan and a liberal. Nothing he says shows anything he’s ever backed up. Empty words.

The fact Cruz seems to be getting pushed to the wayside over this dumbass proves how far America has fallen.

Cruz is the real deal. Trump is an asshat. To put Trump and Cruz in the same sentence is to insult everything that Ted Cruz and conservatism has fought for.

Trump is not a conservative. He made a bunch of brash statements, so what? He’s criticized the Tea Party in the past. And I guarantee you that when the time comes to debate the debt ceiling, a “shudder” President Trump would tell the conservatives to cave.

You want brash talking? Here’ let Bob Knight run for President. What’s the difference?
