The Superbowl of Superholes [Steyn on McCain]

We are cursed, as the Chinese say, to live in "interesting times", about which there is much to say - the Iran deal, for example, or the Allaku Akbar guy running amok in Chattanooga. Yet the dead sloth that is the Republican Party has finally roused itself to spend the last 48 hours hammering Donald Trump for impugning the honor of John McCain.

As his criminal-immigrant surge demonstrates, Trump's support comes almost entirely from Americans who feel the political class passes its time talking about nothing that matters to them. So feel free to spend the weekend talking about John McCain. QED, as Trump is unlikely to say.

On the matter of McCain, in June 1998 the Senator stood up to address a Republican fundraising meeting: "You think that was a tasteless joke?" he began, referring to the previous speaker's closing Viagra gag. "Listen to this one." He then told the following side-splitter:

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?

Oh that’s great.

It is kind of like remembering Seinfeld episodes. There are so many funny ones. I can’t remember the details exactly, but one column he wrote about the Clinton/Lewisnsky affair was so hilarious I thought I would never stop laughing.

Something like...”the Hot steamy pizza crossed over her bosom..”

I do not watch TV news, but tonight I tuned in to see O’Reilly interview Trump by phone. O’Reilly made a complete ass of himself defending McCain. When Trump pointed out that McCain has done a bad job as chairman of the Armed Services Committee, O’Reilly claimed that is the fault of the President. Does this mean he thinks that chairmen of committees have no responsibility for what happens under the auspices of those committees? Things like this is why I don’t watch O’Reilly.

Someone needs to send that pompous ass this article so he can get some perspective on McCain, although I suspect he knows.

Still, we are speaking about degrees of assholery here. I can't quite honestly imagine how big an asshole I'd have to be to tell that Chelsea Clinton joke into a live microphone, as John McCain did. But if "there's a place in our party" for such a man, there's certainly no reason why there shouldn't also be a place for Donald Trump.

That is true. Megan McCain ain't no Miss America either, but I wouldn't make a tacky joke about her.

Steyn. “[T]here was no place in their party for people who disrespect John McCain... no, make that all POWs... no, make that all veterans.”

The problem is that some people took Trump’s words and then made a hasty generalization. For example, “if you don’t like chocolate ice cream, then you probably don’t like any desserts.” And “if you don’t like McCain’s neglect of the VA problems, then you probably don’t like any military men or their wives.”

Hasty generalizations take us away from true sentences, such as Trump is a good speaker; McCain neglects the VA problems.

Forty years ago, John McCain was a war hero. Since then he’s mostly been an asshole.

Steyn writes what I’ve been thinking. Overall this is one of Steyn’s best articles ever.

Two decades back, the media loved McCain because he was their kind of Republican: that's to say, he spent more time attacking other Republicans than he ever did Democrats. And they wanted him to keep on doing that, so they closed ranks around him. Whereas no one wants what Trump wants to talk about to be part of the 2016 election conversation, so anything must be seized on to disqualify him from participation. And, if nothing else is to hand, a sneer at John McCain will have to do...sums it all up....

Mark Steyn, I’ve never loved you more, and I’ve been a huge fan for well over a decade.

You did indeed voice what many of us, maybe even some GOP candidates, are or should be thinking but refuse to state publicly. And not just about Trump’s impolitic comments but about the GOP reactions to those comments.

You phrased it far more kindly than one of my POW friends put it many years ago (and NOT about John Sydney McCain): “Just because you’re a POW doesn’t mean you can’t be an asshole.” And, I suppose, for the most part (to my knowledge only Cruz failed to take the GOPe bait), “GOP presidential candidate” is the perfect substitute for POW in this case. But whodathunk assholism was epidemic?
