Conservative? Donald Trump supported auto bailouts in 2008.
The Daily Caller ^ | 4/20/2011 | Chris Moody

Although Donald Trump is trying to re-invent himself as a conservative for a possible bid for president in 2012, reminders of his prior support for Democrats and big government polices keep adding up. The latest: The Donald supported the auto bailout in 2008.

“I think the government should stand behind them 100 percent,” Trump told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto nearly three years ago. “You cannot lose the auto companies. They’re great. They make wonderful products.”

Faced with crushing debts caused by poor management and high labor costs, GM and Chrysler requested federal assistance to keep the firms afloat, and were granted a $25 billion loan in the fall of 2008. President George Bush then secured more than $17 billion for the companies.

This occurred months before the birth of the Tea Party, but conservatives were outraged.

Not Trump. A longtime advocate of sweetheart deals between corporation and state, the real-estate developer went all in for the deal.

“[Y]ou have to try and save the companies,” Trump said in a separate 2008 Fox News interview. “And I think you can easily save the companies.”

The Club for Growth, a free-market advocacy group that opposed the bailouts, blasted out a statement Wednesday knocking Trump for his support for bailouts over bankruptcy, and cited that the real-estate mogul had succesfully filed for bankruptcy himself four times in the past 20 years.

“If there’s anyone who should know the value of filing for bankruptcy, it’s Donald Trump. He should have known that the $13.4 billion government bailout of the auto industry just put off the inevitable while putting taxpayers at risk,” said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola. “Bailouts and nationalizing whole industries can cripple free markets and has hampered our economic recovery. We need our next President to understand that economic freedom leads to growth and prosperity for all, and that the government should never be in the business of picking winners and losers.”

So, we should pick the lesser of 2 evils then?

I mean, essentially, we are saying that we should support Trump, despite his Liberal views, because no candidate is perfect?

Wrong. I believe in principle...I stand with the only conservative in the race. Ted Cruz.

Trump is not Jeb Bush. Trump can take out Jeb Bush in the debates. If we have Jeb Bush we have Mexico North looking our way. We need all hands on deck to fight the Bush dynasty or he is it.

Nothing is more obviously self-defeating than spitting in the eye of those in the process of coming around to one's way of thinking.

Most Americans have been indoctrinated to some extent by the mass media, who parrot the biased premises of the Left-wing academic establishment. Rich or poor, most have bought the lunacy that people are interchangeable; that they are products of their social environment; that if the central planners can change the social environment, they can miraculously change the behavior of those who act badly, or ineffectively; that socialism, some how, really does work for human betterment.

On the economic front, most have bought some part of the Keynesian fantasy that there is a long-term benefit for artificially rigging the economy, etc..

While I personally believe that Donald Trump is in the process of waking up; that his friendship with Ted Cruz is genuine; that he has a bit of Teddy Roosevelt in him--the good part, not Teddy's embrace of a bit too much dependence on the central Government;--that his love for America is the precipitant of that waking up; there is certainly plenty of time for me to be proven wrong, over the next nine or so months before the Ohio Primary.

But, in the meantime, those of us who really want to turn America back to her heritage, will continue to encourage Donald Trump and other prominent Americans to do exactly what Donald Trump is doing right now--speaking out and challenging the bullies who want to force all Americans to walk on egg shells, as it were, rather than give offense to the beneficiaries of Leftist activism.

LOL...

Nope, just that since I deemed that you and other hate being challenged, I’ll just post articles to prove Trump is a Trojan horse instead.

Maybe reading something will help you.

What some here don't seem to understand that many others here don't see Trump so much as a 'conservative', much less consider him presidential material, but as one of the very few willing to upset an apple cart that badly needed upsetting.

So why don't you lay off, its a political site for political discussion.

Many Freepers have given up their soul because this guy is a tough talker. You will face the back lash of these people because you challenge them. Be careful.

Incorrect. C. Edmund Wright has a long and storied history with FR. He is not nearly as incendiary as you have been (until very recently). He need not be careful at all.

Be my guest. I got no skin in the Trump game.

I do like how he is gaining in the polls -- the more politically-incorrect he becomes, the more his numbers go up.

I hope my guy Cruz notes this and retains this technique.

Trump isn’t conservative, but neither was Romney, McCain, or most if not all of the chumps running.

And those who claimed to be conservative and are in congress... Funny how they changed their tune and went along with Boehner/McConnell and supported Obama’s lunacy.

We elected many conservatives and gave republicans huge victories in 2010 and 2014. IIRC, they ran pretty unequivocally on stopping Obama. How is that working out? Conservative republicans are not pulling out all the stops to do as the promised and many who ran as conservatives turned out not to be so conservative once they got elected. I can’t blame people for being disgusted wanting to try something different. Perhaps if republicans actually kept a promise once in a while, Trump would not even be running?

True, but he’s still only been a conservative for 20 minutes.

Maybe so, but that’s 19 min and 59 sec longer than most of the others.

So not supporting a long time Lefty who is conning people into believing he is a conservative means one supports illegal immigrants and Iran?

You do know that Trump blasted Pamela Geller for standing up to the mullahs and other Islamic bullies with her draw Muhammed cartoon events, right?
