My sister told me at least 20 years later that he had drawn the line with her when she wanted to attend a popular classmate's party on the other side of town. Consider the possibility that it wasn't racism, but legitimate fatherly concern that (even then) the other side of town was not a safe place for a naive teenage girl.
I once looked up an old FBI Uniform Crime Report from the 1950's. The black homicide rate back then was many times the white rate. It's not a new phenomenon.

I attempted not to say it here, but his words to her made it clear that it wasn't just fear of crime.
In spite of that, I am so proud that Dad didn't ever teach me racial hatred.
