The space system is likely an energy weapon. Not missile based.
We already have white projects that demonstrated laser defense against missiles here on Earth. In the vacuum of space, you would have no energy loss and could vaporize anything within line of sight.
IMO, the move away from ICBM technology has nothing to do with treaties or similar nonsense.

Bears go about as fast as a turboprop aircraft can go, whichbis respectably close to the speed of sound. Their contrarotating props spin so fast that the tips actually DO break the sound barrier.
I talked to a former NJ ANG F-106 driver years back and he said that for the -106 the Bear wasn’t an easy intercept at all. Required careful vectoring to reach it at just the right point and turn to come alongside otherwise the -106 would have to go to afterburner to catch up, which would deplete the fuel so much that an escort couldn’t be maintained.
We don't have anything to defend against ICBMs. . .nice to think we do, and most people feel we do, but sadly we don't.
In all cases, if you miss the intercept and roll out behind, of course you have to chase it down.
