Twitter Has Just 49 Black Employees And Jesse Jackson Is Mad

Out of Twitter’s 2,910 U.S. employees, only 49 (1.7 percent) are black, and that fact has black activists led by Rev. Jesse Jackson racing to condemn the company.

Jackson, who has been pressuring tech companies for years to hire more blacks, told The Guardian black Americans are “becoming intolerant” of Twitter’s slow growth in diversity.

Blacks usually reject homosexuals. What could be more “gay” than “tweeting” on “twitter”? So why would a straight black want to work for them?

there are virtually no blacks in applied sciences, mathematics, engineering, or computer science. i didn’t see them when i was in school in the 80’s and early 90’s... and i didn’t see them in industry when i was working in my field in the 90’s and early 00’s.

where there is real discrimination in these fields (especially in silicon valley) is age discrimination. if you’re mid-40’s and looking for engineering work out there, i hope you have a big pile of cash to live on while you wait for somebody (anybody) to respond to your resume. it’s a long wait.

there are silly notions of corporate culture with lots of the younger companies such as Google Inc. where experienced technical folks are treated as dinosaurs. even at age 45, you’re over the hill to many of them. they’d rather hire younger people who don’t yet have lives and are ok with working 60-70-80+ hours a week and living in their cubicles. or they’ll bring in chicoms or indians on H1B visas and basically have indentured servants. it’s a big problem and nobody can/will talk about it, but it’s real. once you’re into your 40’s, you are in the twilight of your career there (for certain fields at certain types of companies).

it wasn’t so overt when i was there back in the 90’s, but i’m discovering that it’s an all too real problem even outside of the valley. i regret leaving my profession to start a small business. i regret spending 12 years on that only to have it ultimately fail due to the 7 years of misery Obama and the ‘RATS have inflicted on us with this economy. i’m seeing first hand that trying to find industry work again in my mid 40’s after taking a number of years off to try my hand at my own business, has made me not only unemployable, but not even able to get interviews.

Yep, that’s true—which is why tech professionals need to identify and get themselves on some sort of modified/management career track by then.

They can go work on the enterprise side, kind of like a law firm attorney going to work in-house for both more manageable hours and less age discrimination. They can shoot straight up in management, or over to the sales engineer management side, or whatever. But to simply be a programmer updating your skills into your 40s is to become a sitting duck. A little like, on another level, a fast food worker wondering why he can’t support his family of four on his minimum-wage job.

BTW, sounds like you have skills, whether they need updating or not, and there should be some sort of fit out there for you. Whether you need to work on a contract basis for a while to build up your current resume or you can start consulting for smaller companies or whatever. If you don’t have sales skills (as many techies don’t), you should find someone with a sales bent to team up with you.

But yeah, tech as you age gets tough. People have blinders on when they’re hiring. But you can’t actually smack them upside of the head if they happen to give you an interview—that’s not an effective persuasion technique in that setting.

That is a big problem for women as well; many tend to avoid the hard subjects in school (STEM), preferring token employment instead. My company promoted some unqualified women (apparently to avoid lawsuits), and I’ve worked the bare minimum hours since - it is like working part-time compared to the schedule I had previously.

In 2005, 153,132 African Americans took the SAT test. They made up 10.4 percent of all SAT test takers. But only 1,132 African-American college-bound students scored 700 or above on the math SAT and only 1,205 scored at least 700 on the verbal SAT. Nationally, more than 100,000 students of all races scored 700 or above on the math SAT and 78,025 students scored 700 or above on the verbal SAT. Thus, in this top-scoring category of all SAT test takers, blacks made up only 1.1 percent of the students scoring 700 or higher on the math test and only 1.5 percent of the students scoring 700 or higher on the verbal SAT.

If we raise the top-scoring threshold to students scoring 750 or above on both the math and verbal SAT — a level equal to the mean score of students entering the nation's most selective colleges such as Harvard, Princeton, and CalTech — we find that in the entire country 244 blacks scored 750 or above on the math SAT and 363 black students scored 750 or above on the verbal portion of the test. Nationwide, 33,841 students scored at least 750 on the math test and 30,479 scored at least 750 on the verbal SAT. Therefore, black students made up 0.7 percent of the test takers who scored 750 or above on the math test and 1.2 percent of all test takers who scored 750 or above on the verbal section.

For companies looking for super-smart people, there just aren't enough qualified blacks to satisfy Jesse Jackson or the EEOC

That’s exactly right, and rather than having consequences for poor performance (which might spur greater effort) we have to politely pretend this is exceptional and they are all winners...

These policies have set them back CENTURIES, and they’re as dependent on government as they were on their owners as slaves - for every basic necessity..
