Fiat Chrysler Must Buy Back Hundreds of Thousands of Ram Pickups
NBC/AP ^ | 07/27/2015 | Associated Press

DETROIT -- Fiat Chrysler must offer to buy back from customers hundreds of thousands of Ram pickup trucks and other vehicles -- the biggest such action in U.S. history -- as part of a costly deal with safety regulators to settle legal problems in about two dozen recalls.

The Italian-American automaker also faces a record civil fine of up to $105 million. In addition, owners of more than a million older Jeeps with vulnerable rear-mounted gas tanks will be able to trade them in or be paid by Chrysler to have the vehicles repaired.

Vehicles eligible for buy-back offer

Models included in the buy-back offer are certain Ram 1500s from 2009 to 2012; the Ram 1500 Mega Cab 4 by 4 from 2008; and the Ram 2500 4 by 4, 3500 4 by 4, 4500 4 by 4, and 5500 4 by 4, all from 2008 through 2012. Also part of the offer are 2009 Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs and the Dodge Dakota pickup from 2009 through 2011.

The cash outlay could be substantial. According to Kelly Blue Book, a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 - one of the smaller, less-expensive trucks involved in the recalls - could fetch $20,000 in a dealer trade-in, assuming the truck has 60,000 miles on it and is in "good" condition. At that rate, if Chrysler had to buy back even a quarter of the trucks at issue, it could spend $2.5 billion.

Heh heh. Fiat Chrysler. Two of the worlds WORST automakers.

Never had any inclination to buy a Dodge Ram. But I might change my mind now. If values fall to 50% of what a Silverado or F150 costs (used), then buying a Ram might be a good deal.

This news comes just days after the news that hackers can disable your FCA vehicle.

Have a 2004 Dakota. Bought used in 2007. Great little truck and handles like sports car. But man, talk about engine repairs. All engineering defects.

First it was head gaskets. Then the engine let go on me about 2 years ago.(4.7 V8) Full reman engine job.

Been running well since (crossed fingers). I’d say to anyone, stay the hell away from the earlier 4.7’s.

I think Dodge does make some of the better looking trucks though.

On my fifth Ram. Never had a problem with any of them. Put 230,000 on a 2002 with no problems. Friends have GMC’s and Fords. I’ll keep my Ram. Just got a 2015 so far so good.

How fun could that be to re-sell the dealer your vehicle and make the dealer play the games they put you through when you buy...

I would designate my 5 year old to be the Sales Manager, and maybe my dog to be the Business Manager, and some other characters to perform support roles. Take each dealership offer and counter offer to the respective Manager for approval, make them waste their day staring at the wall while this crap plays out. Woo-hoo!

A few years ago the rear end on our 2005 Ram locked up at high speed...a little scary.

I spent $2k buying a junk yard rear end and installed myself.

Well now I just got a recall notice...they need to fix a bearing in the rear end, or it could lock up...who knew. Well now I don’t know what to do - will they touch my replacement rear end, and is it from a year or production run included in the recall. But here’s the kicker - the notice said that not enough parts exist to fix the problem....so stay tuned for another notice! Ah, Dodge....

What actually happens to these when they come back to FCA?
Scrapped?
Or repaired to some standard that can’t be done for the current owner and sold in 3rd world countries?

I guess that’s true if you are into ‘58 Buick “Styling.”

My 04.5 diesel just keeps on tickin’. Biggest problem so far is the horn pad, the horn won’t turn off and I can’t buy just a pad. Gotta buy the whole air bag and center assembly. That stinks.

I think I’d buy one of these at the right price if I needed one. Especially a pre-DEF diesel.

Ram 2500 4 by 4, 3500 4 by 4, 4500 4 by 4, and 5500 4 by 4, all from 2008 through 2012.

I only have about 21,000 miles on my 2012, 1500 quad cab. Never had a problem. Not sure if I’m in the buy back or not. The article didn’t say that all Ram models were included. If they buy it back, apparently you have to buy a new Chrysler vehicle to get the full value amount of your vehicle.
