Mark Cuban summarized Donald Trump’s appeal in just 43 words
Washington Post ^ | 07/29/2015 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 07/29/2015 8:17:13 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Noted Maverick Mark Cuban is a fan of Donald Trump's presidential candidacy. And, writing on something called Cyber Dust, Cuban succinctly and effectively explained the Trumpian appeal. Here it is:

I don't care what his actual positions are. I don't care if he says the wrong thing. He says what's on his mind. He gives honest answers rather than prepared answers. This is more important than anything any candidate has done in years.

That's a remarkable admission. "I don't care what his actual positions are," Cuban said. "I don't care if he says the wrong thing." And, it affirms my working theory that lots and lots of people who say they are for Trump don't know the first thing about where he stands on any issue this side of immigration. His is not a policy appeal or even really a political one. It's pure personality.

In a world in which lots of people -- Cuban included -- believe that political correctedness has run wild and the outrage police are everywhere, someone who is willing to just say stuff and not back down has real appeal. "This guy isn't afraid of anyone!," you can imagine a Trump supporter saying. "He says whatever he damn well pleases!"

That attraction would explain why Trump has survived (and thrived) in the aftermath of comments about Mexicans and POWs that would have ended or, at least, badly damaged, a more traditional candidate. People, at least if Cuban is to be believed (and I think he is), aren't really listening to the specifics of what Trump is saying. They don't care. All they know is that he is freaking out the squares -- and they L-O-V-E that.

And that justifies giving money to Clintons?

Because they can grease the skids for you?

What project did DT need the Clinton’s help to get done?

Remember a lot of what you see from Donald is an act, for his public persona. It sells books, but I believe when he’s doing private business, he doesn’t show that persona.

And I believe that what you see is what you get regardless of the circumstances. I've never read any accounts of his being any different.

"A guy like Trump can steal a good part of the LIV vote from the Democrats. "

He'll get some of the Dem, and a good percentage of the Indy too. It'll be a spectacular shellacking. This assumes he doesn't eventually shoot himself in the hoof.

Big Assumption.

You and I don't have to deal with the problems in a Trump world. The idea of doing this is foreign to us. It's still a reality Trump has to deal with.

Who are the main players in New York? Republicans? Think about it.

Did he get anything in return? How would I know?

If you're dealing with union people building things for you, who knows what makes things run smoother. Someone's upset with you and you drop that you paid big money to Hillary. Does that smooth things over? I don't know.

On first blush, I don't like that he gave money to Clinton either. On the other hand, I don't have in the neighborhood of $10 billion dollars on the line that could be $3 billion in short order if I don't play a smart game.

The bottom line is, regardless of what you may think of Trump, can anyone question his love for this country, and his general concern about where it is headed?

I fully expect it. Then again, he’s already blown off a few toes, and no one seems to care.

I mean seriously, why would a guy with as much money, fame and power as Trump has, subject himself to the arrows that come along with modern-day politics?

Agreed. Cuban gets it.

No, and I’ll explain why I see it that way.

Trump has a vested interest in this nation. He’s worked for what he has, and he knows what’s at stake. He understands what’s at risk for his kid’s future.

Obama on the other hand, has had all this handed to him. He hasn’t a clue what the value of anything is. He basically woke up one day and someone had handed him the presidency.

He’s now worth milti-millions, and has done essentially nothing to earn any of it.

He has no idea what impact he will have on this nation, as a side effect of him achieving his goals.

His own daughter’s futures are being severely impacted, and he hasn’t a clue that this is the case.

Obama thinks that in his new World Order, folks like him will be King.

In a normal environment, it’s folks like him that would get rolled by more savvy people in the market-place.

Moments ago I found this commentary by Jonah Goldberg.

I think it directly applies to our discussion, particularly the ending.

The cult of personality worked for Obama in the age of TMZ, so why not?

But I think Republican primary voters are smarter. Trump’s support will gradually fade.

Still, there’s a lot to be said for a candidate who speaks his mind. And last night my wife confirmed that women don’t like wishy-washy guys.

The sad fact is, that to win future elections a Conservative candidate will need to take the “Cult of Personality” Approach. I know it’s counter to everything Conservatives stand for, but if you don’t win elections, what can you do?

MR was a businessman living in one-Party MA but there are no records of him contributing to Ted Kennedy or John Kerry or any other Dem for that matter.

Didn’t DT say he loves HRC and thought she’d make a fantastic president?

Didn’t he say he wanted Oprah as his running mate?

I’m sorry you were under the impression Mitt Romney was a real-estate magnate. If there’s anything I can do to help, let me know.

As for his comments on Hillary and Oprah, I don’t know what context those were made in.

I don’t have to agree with everything the man has ever said to support him.

If you wish to ignore anything decent he has said. Go ahead. The rest of us will pick up the slack.

Just don’t call everyone one else low information, when you refuse to address a boatload of information.

He does like to add feathers to that cap.

Obviously he’ll be able to turn a term into another several billion dollars, but how his current enterprise would endure without his direct involvement is a big question.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see him win in landslide, get his cabinet packed, then resign after a year.

He is the unlimited wild card.

Didn’t DT once say he considered himself more of Dem than a Rep? Is this not reflected in his political campaign donations, not just the Clintons?

I remember back in 2008 BHO, too, was a big fad. With all of his “hope and change” and “yes we can” BS. His campaign was full of vacuous platitudes and hot air. But he wasn’t thoroughly vetted and investigated. Everything was hidden including his birth records and college transcripts and radical associations.

Don’t you think we should thoroughly investigate DT before we jump on his bandwagon-—also his past positions on all of the issues?

Oh and I guess if real estate is your business, we can look the other way when you write checks to the Clintons and other Democrats.

Well considering there's little difference between the two, is that really that big of a deal?

Having been in on the Reagan years in California as a local level bureaucrat I will say the guy had a unique but staunch view of what the US should be. First of all was his expounding that citizens should be faithful to the government given to us by the Founders. I was at a number of state hearings on issues when/where his personal intervention claimed the decision. He was a man of action. Trump would do well to emulate Reagan.
