With debate looming, Trump has huge lead in latest poll (Trump at 26%)

The identities of the 10 Republicans likely to be on stage at Thursday’s presidential debate are coming into focus after another poll on Monday shows Donald Trump running away from the rest of the field and Rick Perry lagging behind his competitors for the final spot.

A new Monmouth University poll has Trump at 26 percent, easily topping his competitors. The next-closest candidates — former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker — are at 12 percent and 11 percent, respectively.

Both the new Monmouth survey and an average of the five most-recent live-caller polls — Fox News’ criteria for whittling the list of Republicans down to 10 candidates for Thursday night’s debate — reinforce the tiers that have developed since Trump upended the race by surging to the top

I was at an after church barbeque yesterday for my wife's church. There was extensive talk about Trump and how we need somebody from the outside - who has not been corrupted by a career in politics. This is a very conservative crowd but they were willing to overlook any "flaws" Trump might have with respect to being a model conservative or Christian. They have had enough of establishment politicians and many of them truly fear for this country's future if we do not put it back on track. Overwhelmingly, they see Donald Trump as the man who will do it. They recognize that he loves this country and at least proclaims himself to be a Christian, though probably no altar boy - and that's enough for them.

There's a lot of talk among the Beltway crowd and other political pundits that this whole Trump thing is a summertime fling and that he will eventually say or do something that will cause his supporters to abandon him. I do not see that. The enthusiasm for Donald Trump is very, very strong and as I pointed out, everybody is aware of his flaws, but willing to overlook them.

This is no "flash in the pan." Also, considering Trump's massive ego, there's no way he is going to back away now. If he does so, the reputation he has spend decades building will go out the window.

The comparisons to Perot in 1992 do not hold with regard to Trump. Perot destroyed his reputation with his 1992 hijinks. Does anybody see Ross Perot today as anything but a laughingstock? Donald Trump does not want to be another Ross Perot. He's in this for the long haul and he's in it to win.

If Trump gets the nomination, I see him winning in states that Republicans have not taken for years. New York, New Jersey and California for example. Could be an epic landslide that we haven't seen since the days of Reagan.

Since these polls have been shown to be off by as much as 15%, what validity are they for deciding debate members?

The Republican Party is the Stupid Party because of the voters (the people in your church, your neighbors, you’re cousin’s boyfriend). These are the people whose whole political epistemology is a little Fox News in between the 19 Kids and Counting marathon and the Duck Dynasty marathon. The leadership and pols know what they’re doing.

The Stupid Party will not nominate Ted Cruz. They’ll give several reason: regurgitating media and establishment talking points. “He’s a firebrand, he’s too conservative, he can’t work with Democrats or Republicans, we need a moderate to defeat Hillery.” If I’m wrong, I’m wrong. I’m just afraid the Stupid Party is on the Trump Express and none of the proofs that he’s a lifelong liberal will sway them.

People are going to be mad at me November 9th, 2016, but I told them who I’d vote for. Cruz or Lose. No one else will reverse or slow the damage the Washington Cartel has done to the country so there’s no reason to vote for them. We’re better off if the mealymouthed Walkers, Jindals, and Hucksters lose.

10 is seriously too many for a real debate. Five would be pushing it

With 10 in the debate, each candidate only gets a total (on average) of about 5 minutes of air time, leaving no time for anything but empty cliches and sound bites. You need a decent block of time to spell out policy proposals, so we won't have any of that in the upcoming debate.

How is it that I’ve never met a REAL person who even LIKES Jeb Bush, yet he’s always a top guy in these polls???

Most real folks I know like Ted but he’s always way down in these dumb polls.

I think they are propaganda and/or the primaries are rigged badly. I remember George W. Suddenly appearing and winning all when nobody here or in my real world liked him. And I’m talking real Conservatives who don’t just sit home hoping.

Is the group at your wife’s church rural, small town, suburban, or urban?

There are 11 participants not 10.

The MSM is a de facto participant since they decided to maliciously and intentionally slander Trump multiple times.

He will play this to his advantage.☺

Ted Cruz,Mike Huckabee,Ben Carson,Chris Christie,Rand Paul, and Marco Rubio are statistically and perhaps even effectively out of the race absent something big.

Fox would have some justification making the main debate between Trump/Walker/Bush, and relegate the rest of the pack to the side-show debate at 5:00

Suburban. More precisely, Fairfield County, CT which is part of metro NYC.

The Stupid Party will not nominate Ted Cruz.

Cruz has only a small following.

The politicians lose.

They can’t debate common sense or what the hell benefit’s America and American’s. They have to please their owners, the government and other countries, most of which are collecting tax cash in the form of bribes.

Agreed. He’s the perfect conservative candidate. He’s not trying to full the electorate with compassionate conservatism and new tones or clever weasel words. He knows what he believes, he knows why, and articulates it. It’s the same thing we believe and it’s consistent.

Yet here we are allowing the media to choose our candidate. That’s why it’s the Stupid Party, and why I only register Republican in primary years.

I don’t agree that he’s the perfect conservative candidate, which is why he was never on my list of candidates.

Cruz has too small a voice, notice he has been out shouted by Trump. Trump isn’t saying anything that Cruz hasn’t said, but no one has heard Cruz say those things.

Cruz lacks wisdom, he believed McConnell when McConnell lied to his face. Who the hell believes McConnell? Did you? I don’t think you did either, yet Cruz voted for TPA based on that lie. Do you really want someone like that negotiating with Iran? I don’t.

Those are just two points that show he’s less than the perfect conservative candidate.

ALL on that stage and the comentators too—will be Out to get Trump! They will gang up on him with insults—lies—Old news—to hit him—make him mad so he will say something stupid and make mistakes. That’s the plan—and it might work. Its the “Get Trump” Show. It will be a bloodbath—but great TV. IF Trump survives—he is a better man than I think.

Trump has been attacked from all sides for quite a while now. He can handle it.

If they all attack and he stays cool and calm, he will come off as presidential and they will look like idiots.
