House Republicans said Monday that they have the GOP votes to disapprove of the Iran nuclear deal as Democrats stepped up their support of the agreement the Obama administration and other world powers negotiated with Tehran.
Since Republicans hold a commanding 246 seats in the House, it was widely expected that the GOP would come up with 218 votes to support a resolution of disapproval, which has been introduced by Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill.
"Time is not the friend of this deal," Roskam said in a statement. "The more time members spend evaluating this agreement, the more they realize it's an historic mistake."
It's unclear, however, if there would be enough votes in the House to override President Barack Obama's expected veto of the legislation. The president is counting on Democrats to sustain his veto, and House Minority leader Nancy Pelosi has said they will.
Obama would need 34 members of the Senate or 146 members of the House to stand with him.
On Monday, California Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Anna Eshoo joined an expanding list of representatives who have announced their support of the international accord.
Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said the deal "realistically precludes Iran from developing an atomic bomb" for at least 15 years.

R I G H T ........
I predict it comes up one vote shy
And as usual it will fail by one or two BUT WE TRIED!!!!!!
Bullshit.
The veto is the thing....and no way will they overturn it.
Let’s hope so.
Then, let’s hope the U.S. military has the nerve it needs to bomb Iran EVEN if OZERO does not order them to do so or orders them to stand down. And if Russia interferes, well, we’d need to deal with them, too. We still have the ability to have a MILITARY solution here. So why waste time with dipBALONEY?
All Republicans but one voted in the process by which a 2/3 majority was required to reject the treaty, instead of a 2/3 majority to ratify the treaty.
They will now claim they were against it, but they knew it would be impossible to reject it when the set this scheme up from the beginning.
The are following enough, though, to get by with it, since no one is watching the hen house.
If two thirds of the Senate is required to ratify a treaty, then what is all this "resolution of disapproval" falderal for? So much stuff and nonsense!
“following” should be “fooling”
Agree, and it will play out as planned by Boehner and McConnell in conspiracy with Obama.
Congress passes special law for this purpose, then claims it is not a treaty, but an “agreement.”
They are lying to us.
Less boo-hoo and more do.
Public Law No: 114-17 (05/22/2015)
The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 1995
Congress is divesting itself of authority under the Constitution so that they King is pleased.
Perhaps Justice Roberts could tell us if it’s a treaty or an agreement.
I bet he can’t, but that won’t stop him from trying.
Yeah. Right. No way this survives a veto.
It is too bad that the Republican party would so poorly draft legislation that they would constantly need to refer the terminology to the courts for interpretation, even after the legal and mental gymnastics the court has exhibited through the present.
Do they not know that the court is compromised?
It won’t matter.
Humor imitating life, I think.
