MINNEAPOLIS — U.S. District Judge Michael Davis had seen this in his courtroom before — a young Somali-American who hadn’t previously been a troublemaker was now accused of conspiring to leave the U.S. and join the Islamic State group.

The 6-foot-5 Davis, who can make defendants fidget with his long, drawn-out silences, stressed the gravity of the charges and tried to gauge whether this particular young man was truly dedicated to jihad or simply misguided and a possible candidate for rehabilitation.

Of the millions of jihadis, only writer Walid Shoebat comes to mind as one who rehabilitated. Anyone know of any others? History shows that rehabilitation is not very likely.

The judge should take this poor misguided “yute” into his own home and mentor him.

What the heck is wrong with Minnesota?

Federal judge tries to take nuanced approach in terror cases is a left wing way of saying, the bleeding heart judge is turning them loose faster than the authorities can haul them in.

My idea of “rehabilitation “ is to set them upright in a chair....cut their heads off...and very respectfully place their heads in their laps....those that see the light and put their heads on straight have been “rehabilitated”...the others...give ‘em time...They may come around to my way of thinking....*W*

“Cases like the ones currently in front of Davis — eight young men charged with conspiring to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State group — are challenging for any judge, Folk said. They’re complex and require managing a community that’s emotionally involved and sometimes feels unfairly targeted.”

Not sure why the community is relevant. If a jury has found them guilty beyond a reasonable doubt of conspiring to head out and join ISIS, I don’t see where there’s much room for nuance.

“I think he’s been able to see that terrorism cases aren’t black and white”

Nope, they are life and death. No big deal.

Far-left Amish do-gooder.

With any luck, if a “rehabilitated” jihadist blows up the federal courthouse, he’ll be in it.

A rehabilitated jihadist is like a polite rattlesnake.
