How Well Does Jeb Bush Habla Español?
National Journal ^ | 8/3/15 | ALEXIA FERNÁNDEZ CAMPBELL

"We speak Spanish at home. We eat Mexican food at home. Our children are Hispanic.”

There was no que bola? or que onda? during Jeb Bush's debut on Spanish-language network television this weekend. The former Florida governor left out the Mexican slang and Cubanisms during his 25-minute interview Sunday with Telemundo's José Díaz-Balart.

It's clear that the Republican presidential candidate speaks Spanish fluently (with a gringo accent, of course). During the sit-down interview, Bush discussed immigration reform, Cuban foreign policy, and the Puerto Rican debt crisis with only a handful of minor word-gender mistakes.

Bush, who is married to a Mexican woman and who has been embraced by Miami's Cuban exile community, kept his Spanish mostly neutral during the chat. You could only hear a slight trace of Miami in his accent, when he dropped the last "s" in some of his words. He did refer to himself as a niño popis when he met his wife, Columba, during a high school trip to central Mexico. That's Mexican slang for "spoiled boy."

If Jeb made it to the White House, he would be the first bilingual U.S. president in 70 years. The last one was FDR, who spoke French and German fluently. Past presidents have brushed up on their Spanish, knowing how important it is to reach Latino voters. But few, including President Obama, can really say much.

Speaking Spanish is not a race. Anyone, of any race, can learn to speak Spanish.

I speak English, as it is the language of the US.

Oh yes! I identify with “Hispanic” so, so much!

I particularly love these little illegals infesting our countryside; our schools; our hospitals; our gas stations, Home Depot Parking lots and vacant corners. I’m especially heart warmed when I see them at the DMV, at County Services offices, and at H&R Block at the Big Box stores every year filing for the their EITC checks.

I am especially proud now that nearly every product in my Walmart has at least some Spanish on it - many it is the predominant advertising. Bravo, Yebito!

Your driving insistence with all things Mexican has done us proud. Keep up the good work!

This plus the many other obsessive statements he’s made shows he’s clearly pandering to Latinos, be they technically a “race” or not, you get the point

I speak Spanish fluently because my Advanced Spanish prof in college was from Spain. On the first day of class, he told us two things would be necessary to pass his class.

“You think you know Spanish because you’ve had a lot to get to this class. But you don’t know a language unless you think in the language, and dream in it. You won’t pass this class at the end unless you are thinking in Spanish - and you can’t fool me. I can tell if you are thinking in Spanish or translating....”

“Number two: my language is a beautiful language - and I cannot stand to hear it spoken with a gringo accent. If you speak with an American/gringo accent you will not pass this class. I will teach you two accents - Castillian and Mexican, and you must be good at both to pass this class.”

Because I am also fluent - and more at home - in Brazillian Portuguese, many Latino’s think I am Brasillian.....

As I’ve yet to live in a Spanish-speaking country, my vocabulary is limited, and I still have trouble understanding them when they are in native 100mph mode. Colombian, Ecuadorian, Peruvian, Chilean and Argentinian Spanish are easier for me to understand. Mas puro.

My son lives in Nicaragua (Nica wife) and speaks Spanish far better than I, but for a couple years had a horrible gringo accent - I was always on his case about his horrible accent - but now he is much better and his gringo accent is fading.....

I believe if you are going to learn another language, you must learn to speak it as the natives do.

When I’m in Brasil, they ask me, “Where are you from? I know you are Brasileiro, but where are you from?” because I learned my Portuguese all over the country and do not have a regional accent - theirs are very distinct - Paulista, Carioca, do Sul (south), etc.

“It’s clear that the Republican presidential candidate speaks Spanish fluently (with a gringo accent, of course).”

Kinda arrogant statement. Not all of us gringos have accents when speaking Spanish.

Nicest compliment I’ve ever gotten (and I’ve gotten it a number of times) is “Hablas sin acento”. Learned in Venezuela starting at 14. Kinda fun, actually, since I’m a blue-eyed gringo. Holding my tongue comes in handy here in San Antonio as well!

The real issue is whether he can speak “Conservative”.

Gringo Jorge is about as latino as a Frito. I’m a native Texan of Irish descent and I sprechen sie Tex-Mex and various other parts of languages at home because I like to emphasize my diversity. But mostly, I and others like to speak “Conservative”.

If you come to Texas, be prepared to speak a little German, Cajun French , Mexican Spanish, Eubonics, and plantation English if you want to communicate with and understand the natives and our heritage.

Sorry, no comprehende Chinese or Arabic?

Jebbie don’t like English as he is a NWO kind of guy. If he keeps this B.S. line up he will just lose sooner.
