Judge cited Paxton’s ‘high profile’ case as reason to discard towel for mugshot

Update at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday: A judge cited “the high profile nature” of Attorney General Ken Paxton’s criminal case and his right to a fair trial as reasons to allow him to be photographed without a towel covering his clothes after his arrest, which is policy in Collin County.

Paxton faces three felony charges regarding securities violations.

District Judge George Gallagher of Tarrant County, who is presiding over Paxton’s case, issued a written order Monday asking Collin County Sheriff Terry Box to not use a towel for Paxton’s jail booking photo. A spokesman with the Collin County Sheriff’s Office had said that the judge had given a verbal order to the sheriff.

Lt. Chris Havey, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said he wasn’t sure in what order the verbal and written orders occurred.

Havey also said in an email that he wasn’t aware of other instances in which a judge ordered that a towel not be used in a mugshot, but “that’s not to say it has never happened.”

You’re right. Acute asymmetry in facial features.
The article makes no mention. Maybe he normally looks like this. What I couldn’t figure out was why all the talk about ‘towels’ for mugshots? Then I saw other mugshots from this precinct. They don’t put suspects in an orange jumpsuit for their mugshot, they sort of wrap the people up in a robe or a big white towel. Maybe the towel makers have a longterm union contract with the city. Where are the towels? There have to be towels!

The palsy could be congenital - I once did a finger stick on a patient with much greater facial asymmetry, who said that it was there from birth.

Letter from Paxton:

I am honored and overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and encouragement that my family and I have received over the last few days. Know that I expect to be fully vindicated of these charges when the full facts of this case come to light, and I refuse to be distracted or deterred from my commitment to the people of Texas to fight for the Rule of Law. I assure you that my focus on serving Texas as Attorney General continues with greater resolve than ever before. To that end, I will of course direct all case-related questions to my legal counsel.

True about the eye. The smile? I think it was a forced smile and he distorted it.

I’m sure it was a very uncomfortable moment

My thoughts exactly. IIRC, could be caused by a stroke, or congenital.

I have had Bell’s palsy twice in my twenties. The nerve going through the bone above your ear, swells and it hurts until the nerve swells as much as it can in the bone, then it doesn’t hurt any more, but that side of your face doesn’t work - when you try to drink, water will spill out of your mouth and your smile is crooked because one side of the mouth doesn’t move. I did have to use my hand to close my eye.

Eventually, the nerve shrinks back down to size and the side of the face works again. However, truth be told, one side of my mouth still doesn’t smile as much as the other side but I think I’m the only one who notices that small amount of difference.
