The Canadian relatives on my mother’s side of the family *all come to the U.S. for their surgeries!*

They can’t get the procedures done as quickly and efficiently in Canada!

Every Canadian I have talked to is happy with their healthcare system. No one in Canada ever goes bankrupt due to serious health problems.

But Canada is small and Scotland even smaller, in comparison to US.

I do not like single payer because it is government run. My ideal system is summarized on my profile page.

"He says the same thing on trade."

He does, and THERE is where he should flesh out what he bases the comment on. On immigration though he does note the "smarter" qualifications.

People can convince themselves of anything.

I noted that Trump makes vast proclamations of what he will do but he never mentions doing them within constitutional constraints. I was informed that its time to do things by any means necessary and if Obama doesn’t follow the constitution, neither should we.

When I suggested that Trump might be asked about his feeling that Pam Geller had the Garland terror attack coming, and had FReepers declaring that she brought it on herself because Donald Trump says so. A few FReepers were just fine with Trump attacking and threatening to “expose” Michelle Malkin’s secrets too.

I don’t think Donald Trump has denied that Bill Clinton encouraged him to run and manipulate GOP politics but his supporters seem to be just fine with it.

The man is a dire threat to conservatism itself.

I had a Canadian girlfriend bring her daughter here to get a tick bite checked out because my doc got her in within 2 days vs the months it would be before a Canadian doc could see her.

No one in Canada ever goes bankrupt due to serious health problems.

But they too frequently go dead because they can't get their serious health problems addressed in a timely manner.

This is NOT a defense of the Canadian health care system but I think it is grossly misunderstood by most people in the US.

Let me first say that the Canadian system, as practiced, would not work in the US. Canada has a population 10% the size of the US, making administration that much easier. In addition the actual implementation of health care is left up to the provinces. If the US federal government was to try and administer such a system it would be a complete disaster.

I am as conservative as the next guy, but knowing that a medical problem will not turn into a devastating financial problem for you or your family or anyone else makes life a lot easier. Knowing you will never face an insurance bill or a hospital bill buys a lot of peace of mind.

We can argue about the standard of care in Canada, there are differences, but in the main the standard of care is fairly high. They do not give nearly as many tests in Canada, not only to cut costs but because the doctor's do not have to practice defensive medicine, with one eye on your chart and one eye on their malpractice insurance premium.

Yes, care is rationed and there are problems. If you go into a Canadian ER with a hangnail you will wait a long time for care. If you come in with an arm hanging off, they will get you in right away. The problem is that the guy with the hangnail expects immediate service.

CC, I find this hard to believe. When I go to a clinic I get in immediately.

In the debate, Trump said he favored private healthcare, with increased insurance competition, and a separate system to pay for indigent care.

Rand Paul and you didn’t listen and are having a hard time.

Your information is wrong. Canadian health service gives top priority for all life threatening health problems. But those requiring non-life threatening procedures such as knee replacements, hip replacements, vasectomies, plastic surgery, sex change operations, etc require long waits.

Except I want Trump not Cruz. Trump understands the international trade issues and the economy. Cruz doesn’t.

Cruz is great on abortion and traditional marriage, but knows squat about the economy.

"He also said Mexico’s government was “smarter” than ours. How does one come to that conclusion"

Who is ending up with the Mexican crimnals? Mexico or the U.S.? The U.S..

You made the point yourself...

Mexicans leave Mexico to come here and are encouraged by the Mexican government so the government doesn’t have to support them...The USA supports them and they send money BACK to Mexico...How much money does Mexico send to the USA????

Wages are low in Mexico and USA sends production TO Mexico...Therefor, Mexico gains job markets for the people at no cost to the Mexican government...The money earned by Mexicans FROM USA companies is spent, not in the USA, but in Mexico...

Tell me now, who has the smarter plan??????

I don’t know if it had anything to do with it but the girlfriend had just moved from Toronto to Windsor.

She could go to a clinic in Windsor but said she wouldn’t get a doctor for several months. She was in a panic over lyme disease because of the tick bite. My doc gave the girl a check up and explained that we hadn’t had any local cases of lyme disease and it wouldn’t show up in a few days anyway.

Did not Trump say to do away with artificial lines around states (open up states for competition) and have PRIVATE healthcare away from government????

Which has been a conservative plan spoken about with minor variations since before the passage of Obamacare.

I listened.

Trump on Single Payer:

So he was for it before he was against it. Yet someplace else, he's still for it.
