Scott Walker had every chance to serve up something new, something different in the six minutes or so of airtime he had in that debate. He gave solid answers, but in his closing just recapitulated what people already knew.

For better or worse, Americans are used to being entertained. Obama broke many rules of protocol, of political etiquette, urging supporters to "get in their faces". They did. It was an invective against the established order, titillating people by moving that which could not be moved.

Trump understands this about the culture and the times. It isn't about policy positions so much as how he is entertaining the spectators in the arena, defeating those warriors thought to be gods.

He is seeing this campaign at a higher level of abstraction from the others, informed by his understanding of popular culture, playing 3D chess while the others poke ahead at checkers.

That is why Scott Walker's support is eroding and why Trump is soaring.
