A close call for the person filming near the site of the Tianjin chemical explosion as he narrowly avoids being hit by shattering glass. Bonus drone video of the aftermath also included plus photos.

Mein Gott!
China’s Texas City.
The Chinese tell me over 1,000 dead. Official reports far less.
50 dead my ass.
Check this out;
“Hyundai’s damage from Chinese explosion estimated at 160 bln won (4,000 cars)”

I’m hearing greater than that number by far. Logistics operations in that part of the country are crippled and the loss of life & property is more than the Chinese will ever admit to. The entire event is being censored within the country.
So what caused the explosion, ag chemicals? OR was this something else?
I can only imagine what chemicals have been released into the air. They are lucky it wasn’t Bhopal all over again.
In this case there is a problem with reporting killed that can be excused. Reported injured is based on those treated for injuries, so it is a lot easier. But this explosion was so hot that it burned the paint off all of those cars, after shattering their glass and melting all their plastic.
What it would do to human bodies, especially those where the fire lasted, is that there might be very little remains left.
There are many stories in modern wars where a soldier was next to one hit by a high explosive round, leaving almost no body. Yet because there are no dog tags or other identifiable remains, they have to be listed as MIA.
Looks like Space 1999 was about 16 years early...
Here’s a hint:
A B-52, fully loaded w 102, 500 lb. bombs would be required to cause this much damage.....although the footprint would be different.

This clip was taken hours after the blasts, hours of suffering while seeking medical assistance...
There was some good news...Chinese firefighter was found and pulled from rubble after being trapped for 32 hours
Yet, on the other hand, I caught a brief glance at Fox & Friends report on Tianjin aftermath and was stunned to see locals pushing brooms to sweep the thick layer of ash/debris - kicking up whatever poisons remain. Some wore kerchiefs to cover their nose/mouth, but not all.
You got that right! I was expecting something on the order of OKC, but, this is almost on the magnitude of the April, 1947 SS Grandcamp explosion in Texas City.
I was in the fourth grade -- about 17 miles away from the Grandcamp -- when the shockwave knocked things off our desks. We had a clear view of Texas City out across the Coastal Plain, and I have distinct memories of the bright orange (oxides of nitrogen from the ammonium nitrate) smoke before the explosion, and mushroom cloud afterward.
Many kids said, "an A-Bomb!", but the smoke soon turned black from burning petroleum, and I said, "No, there was some kind of chemical fire first; it's probably a chemical plant explosion".
Lots of the kids' fathers worked in Texas City, so, for that reason -- and to clear the Galveston Highway for emergency traffic from Houston -- they quickly shut down the (Webster) school and bussed us the 7 miles back to our homes across from the gate of Ellington AFB.

I have worked with the Chinese. They have a totally different mindset toward risk to human life than we do. They had no scruples about storing high explosives in a warehouse with tons of all sorts of other toxic chemicals (including cyanide salts) -- in a major city!
That must have been one amazing experience. I heard that at least half the dead were onlookers who had gathered to view the ship on fire, without any notion that it could blow.

My parents had been WWII air raid wardens, and were fully trained first aiders. As an only child, I attended their training, and was certified, too.
My dad went to TC from Houston before noon, taking a truck load of trained first aiders and supplies. He had supervised piping installation during construction of the Monsanto Plant, and knew his way around inside it, so, he was assigned to lead rescue teams to isolated control rooms, etc. There was escaping chlorine gas, so they were all issued gas masks. Because he had to remove his mask to shout directions, Dad was exposed to the chlorine, and was sent home before midnight. He had made it to within a block of our house when the second ship exploded...
Mother went with him the second day and worked in a first aid station. They discovered that there were dozens of shocked, dazed and deafened victims walking around all over town, many with their skin crisscrossed with tiny splits from the blast overpressure. They often recoiled when adults approached them, but someone discovered that many of them would let a child take them by the hand and lead them to help.
So, the third day. my folks took me into the damaged area, and I led seven adults to first aid. In addition to nearly being trapped when burning oil from a suddenly-ruptured oil tank flooded a ditch between the aid station and our vehicles, I saw many grisly sights to which no child should be exposed...
The adoption of electronic sirens was a real blessing to me. For many years, until they were replaced, the sound of an old, mechanical "growler" siren would make me break out in a cold sweat... Needless to say, I would not ever delibertely expose a child to a scene like that...

I saw many astounding things, but one memorable indication of the force of the blast really stands out: the "stick" or "boom" from a motor crane was blown nearly a mile. It hit the ground, bounced up, hit a wooden power pole about ten feet up, folded around it like a pair of tweezers, and dropped to the ground. Neither the pole nor any of the wires on it was broken! I climbed up on top of the boom -- and, still could not reach the marks where it hit the pole...
Thanks! I hadn’t heard about the Conroe event. Possibly several “downhole” explosive charges detonating might explain the multiple blasts...
That sounds like a 9/11/01-grade experience. Amazing.
I heard that the driveshaft from the GrandCamp was embedded in the grain elevator you see in the pix!
Didn't know about the propshaft; I'll check around.
Been looking for the elevators on Google Earth with no luck; maybe they have been torn down by now...
