Michael Sam will step away from professional football, he announced via Twitter on Friday night.
Sam, the 25-year-old who began the season with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes, cited a tumultuous past year for leaving football at this time.
The Alouettes confirmed in a release that Sam has left the club for "personal reasons" and that he has been added to the team's suspended list.
Sam made the announcement in a series of three tweets.

It's a bird from French Canadian folk lore. Not much different from a team naming themselves Orioles or Cardinals. But then you get those manly men in California calling themselves, "Mighty Ducks". You can't make that stuff up!

Well, he had plenty of talent. But Pro football is a very competitive business. He was very good in college. Very good doesn’t cut it in the NFL.
He never should have been a draft pick, but he was good enough to give it a shot as a free agent. He should have kept his mouth shut and given it his best shot.
Anyone who thinks he would have been the first gay in the NFL probably thinks there were no gay guys in the Army.
But when you profession relies on pure talent, what you do with your private parts should have no bearing on your success.
I do think there’s a lot of dough in his future either in reality tv or MSM sports broadcasting.
I figured he was multi-polar.
I wouldn't say he had ZERO talent but he certainly didn't have pro-level talent, and this was part of the problem. The media built him up to be some kind of gay super athlete who was going to break barriers but like legions of other players, college skills just didn't carry over to the Big League.
At the end of the day, professional football teams want to win and they're going to build a roster that will let them do just that. And if you can't cut it, you're out. Doesn't matter which way you swing.
In Sam's case, his skills at the pro-level could never match the hype. Little wonder he's citing mental stress. He had a lot of weight on his shoulders.
. . . like two years ago, man. Did he even get any play time in the CFL? Or just a big publicity stunt over a nothing burger?
