The most basic problem with Trump is he has no apparent core convictions short of self promotion.

Not long ago the Canadian healthcare system was an example of what we should do and the US system is killing us to this year the “free market” is the solution.

You can’t have it both ways - but many here just look the other way and say “LA LA LA I can’t hear you LA LA LA...”.

But Trump is now saying the right things and is now our savior and damn anyone who says otherwise.

Hey Grandma, it’s called leadership and calling a spade of spade.

You want to call a spade a spade? Fine. Trump isn't a leader, he's an egomaniacal, unprincipled, statist charlatan. And any conservative who believes that he is going to "shake things up" or "change the way DC" works, or anything of the sort, is a fool.

There. I'm telling it like it is.

Granny, I don’t think that the reaction to Trump of so many here indicates that Freepers have ‘lost their senses’.

Most of the people I’ve seen supporting Trump, have at the same time claimed that their first choice is Cruz.

They are just grateful to have a forceful voice putting across their concerns - especially on immigration - as Trump does: fearlessly, and with no political CYA.

Trump is changing the conversation, and for the most part he’s changing it to focus on a lot of our main concerns.

(He’s also making Politics FUN again, after so many years of sheer ugliness or, at best, just plain flaccid dreariness. I like that, even if I don’t agree with Trump on every point.)

Above the Constitution? No.

A nation without borders is not a nation, sure. But America without the Constitution is not America.

No thanks.

And with Trump his immigration stance can change on a dime.

You’re EXACTLY right, DB - but they’re going to jam Jeb Clinton or Hillary Bush down our throat...

Yeah, Cruz was my candidate until Trump came along. I trust Trump more on immigration—as Cruz wants to both legalize illegals here currently and greatly boost the immigrants coming here legally.

I give Trump great credit on the immigration issue and will wait to hear the details on his economic positions, etc. But he is to me quite credible as a guy who made it big in his family business but always had an interest in politics back to when he was a fundraiser, with his dad, for Reagan. Yeah, sometimes he’s winging it, but he really has read a lot and paid close attention over the years. I generally buy his positions coming from a Baby Boomer businessman in NYC.

Beyond all that, he is massively charismatic and convincing and good in one-on-ones, press conferences, and speeches. He is IMO the most gifted political talent in the race.

Cruz has some charm and trust issues (can come off a bit too much like a televangelist). I’m now thinking his best chance at getting elected president is to run after serving eight years as Trump’s veep.

But if Trump falters, I’ll be back in the Cruz camp rather than behind any of the other choices.

Cruz has generally run a decent campaign and is poised to pick up the slack if Trump does stumble, but polling shows Cruz is in no way looked to or trusted on the economy—which is generally the issue voters ultimately vote on. I think his big benefactor brothers’ interest in religious issues is actually pulling Cruz’s campaign too far in that direction to be of any use beyond Iowa.

So you are choosing your candidate on pure emotion without one ounce of common sense? Nope, I don’t get that.

You can bet that whatever position Ted Cruz takes, that it is 100% in the spirit of the US Constitution.

Cruz supported the (not much) Freedom Act, which places the burden on the phone companies to collect meta-data rather than the government. Either way, the data is being collected and stored.

The only candidate with the Constitutionally-correct position on this particular issue is Rand Paul, who vehemently opposed all forms of phone data collection on American citizens not suspected of wrongdoing.

Agree. The situation is disheartening.

Trump's position on the NSA metadata collection seems to be in line with Peter King's.

When were these quotes collected? Trump has "evolved" on many issues.

So Trumps take on immigration supersedes his increasingly interventionist policy positions and this position regarding his approval of a surveillance state? Do you honestly believe Trump can get much of his immigration policy through into law? Would you be OK with him using executive orders to do so?

Instead, be ready to get the Trump shaft. He is talking up a good game, as he did with Democrat talking points in 2012. At the moment, I see no reason to trust him.

The only question is whether the NSA or the companies collect and keep the data.

So Trump is right.

In the digital world it doesn't matter who controls Call Detail Records, the Telecommunications corporations or our government. The records can be accessed at a moment's notice in either case. I worked for Verizon Business (MCI) for 31 years. Before that I had a TS clearance and the crypto gear that I worked with was stamped in big letters "Property of NSA."

This little tempest-in-a-teapot is quite moot. The "powers that be" will do what they wish with or without our knowledge. What everyone is missing here is by long standing policy, they won't tell us or seek our approval for anything concerning National Security. In this I trust Trump to control intrusive information better than most.

Of course there has to be probable cause. Ted Cruz would not object to that.

But look at Paul’s language. He’s not saying anything different than what’s on the books now.

Rand Paul talks a good game because he knows how to throw red meat to conservatives. Like Fiorina he ‘sounds good’ but his track record is abysmal.

Don’t ever quote Rand Paul because he’s a very good liar that knows how to say just what you want to hear. As Ted Cruz says, say to politicians “Don’t tell me! Show me! By their fruits you shall know them!”

Rand Paul is a corrupt little weasel. Here’s the proof:

Not sure I agree with Trump or not on this. I think what bothers me the most is how the NSA data is processed. The devil is in the details. That data is very powerful in the wrong hands. But I do understand why they collect it. I know that personally, I have not acted like my phone calls are private since I found out about the Carnivore system back in about 02. Basically, a computer system that searches for key phrases in all phone calls.

So you are choosing your candidate on pure emotion without one ounce of common sense?

Have you read Trump's plan on dealing with illegal and legal immigration proposals? Does that sound like "emotion" to you?

Has Cruz ever proposed such a plan in his 2.5 years in the Senate?

Thank you for the reality check.

But it’s not to say that they system could not be reviewed and improved to preserve rights, freedoms, liberties.

I remember when Judge Bork was confronted with some of the ‘R’ rated videos that he had rented. I thought that was enough to prosecute the video store and the agents that released the information.

There has to be a balance.
