CALIFORNIA: $15 MINIMUM WAGE, $30 PER PIZZA, MASSIVE FAIL
Breitbart ^ | 8/17 | William Bigelow

Small businesses are already struggling to survive the spate of minimum wage increases to $15 per hour in parts of California.

Last month, the small Bay Area town of Emeryville, California, (population 10,000) decided to act as flag-bearer for raising the minimum wage in California, hiking its minimum wage to $14.44 per hour.

Even though businesses with less than 56 workers are exempt from the $14.44 rate and do not have to raise their wages to $15 until 2018, Vic Gumper, who owns Lanesplitter Pizza, with outlets in Berkeley, Oakland, Albany and Emeryville, decided not only to bite the bullet but swallow it, paying his workers $15 to $25 an hour while eschewing tips or raising prices.

The Government can force you to pay taxes and fees on your business ever if you do not make a profit. They can force you to pay a high minimum wage.

But they cannot force your customers to buy from you to pay these mandates!

I think his point was that those costs get passed on to the customer. Well, if the business wants to or can stay open...

Not talking about welfare, talking about minimum wage.

There is a difference.

So when the high school dropout delivers my $30 pizza, he won't get mad and spit in my pizza from now on if I quit tipping him, will he? Because he sure acted like he expected and deserved a tip last time.

If this takes hold nationwide, there will be no more privately owned restaurants. You eat at home, or you eat at a federally subsidized or controlled outlet. In other words, you’ll have Government Pizza that cost $30+ and a mandatory $5 dollar “delivery tax.”

Just think of the DMV making your pie. Better have ID.

Seattle’s Mayor Ed Murray’s plan to phase in a $15 minimum wage over seven years with a temporary tip credit, was put in effect by voter approval of a radical charter amendment sponsored by the group 15Now. The charter amendment would force all large employers to begin paying $15 in 2015, and would give small business owners just three years to acclimate to the high wage. And the 15Now proposal would not allow for any tip credit. Since that approval, companies have started to move out of Seattle. A commercial property landlord has indicated that they have has multiple business not renewing their lease and have told them “It’s just too expensive to operate in the city.”

From January to June, the city lost about 1,300 restaurant jobs. In June alone, right after April’s $11-an-hour minimum wage took effect, the city lost 1,000 restaurant jobs. That was the highest one-month job loss since the Great Recession in 2009.

I view anything paid on behalf of the employee, UI, WC, FICA... as part of the employee’s compensation and therefore a reduction of the employee compensation. Who writes the check is not the end game. A clear example would be employer payments for employee benefit with statutory limits. When the limits are reached the additional compensation goes to the employee. In California SUI has statutory limits.

Well at $30 dollars a pizza at a restaurant or $15 for a frozen one I’ll make my own from scratch. It’s not that hard.

The government does not have the right to set an hourly pay rate.

They've been doing it since 1938

Generally yes but,the Guv'mint set wages as part of the "New Deal" under the "NRA" (National Recovery Act) which was held to be unconstitutional several years before . They also set wage rates on federal contracts under many acts in decades previous to that.

Because he sure acted like he expected and deserved a tip last time.

That's what I don't understand about tipping practices. A lot of places collect tips into a pool and divide it up among employees. How does that reward the employees who give good service? And if employees expect a tip regardless of the level of service given (or lack thereof), where is the incentive to give good service? It used to be that tips were given solely based on good service. And lack of a tip was not an excuse to spit in food (a very good reason to eat where you can see the food being prepared and served).

I’ve seen them wear a hair net over their knitters. If a hair net wasn’t hot enough. I think it cuts down on their productivity.
