Most of Buick's future U.S. cars may come from overseas
Yahoo/Rueters ^ | 8/18/2015 | Paul Lienert and Bernie Woodall

Most Buick vehicles sold in the United States after 2016 could be imported from China and Europe, according to two sources familiar with parent General Motors Co's plans.

Only two of Buick's future U.S. models, replacements for the mid-size LaCrosse sedan and the large Enclave crossover, are expected to be built in North America, according to the sources, who did not want to be identified because their companies work with GM.

...

In Detroit, Cindy Estrada, head of the UAW's GM department, said the automaker would be "tone deaf" to import vehicles from overseas "after the sacrifices by U.S. taxpayers," as well as union concessions, to create a profitable GM after a government-funded bailout in 2009.

...

China is the largest market for the Buick brand, with sales last year of 919,582 vehicles, more than four times the 228,963 vehicles that Buick sold in the United States.

A Chinese Buick?

Great. That should be an improvement. Like all Chinese imports, I would expect to pay about $8,000 for a new Buick.

Now that price - along with no union bloat - would and could entice me to buy a Buick.

But until then - forget it.

General Electric wants to do the very same thing with Locomotive production, under the guise of “For country-In country” over in China. I could all but guarantee that setting up factory production in China would lead to locomotive production over there for sales to Class 1 railroad customers here in North America.

Per the article, four times as many Buicks are sold in China as in the US.

If the only option is UAW labor if they build them here, I can’t really fault them.

Without the ‘veto, what exactly is the reason for GM?

And they evidently are trying desperately to ruin that also, what with their exploding engines.

Someday, they’ll get the hint and hire their second engineer.

Was in China last year and noticed the Buick GL8 van, only available in China, was one of the most popular cars on the road.

Oops, that’s ‘vette....not veto.

I had a Biden moment.

Oh, if they make a Buick as in that responder’s picture, I’ll take two. Good looking machine.

I’d expect most of the vehicles to come from China, given the sizable operations GM has built up there. It’s the one foreign market where Buick is the best-selling brand in its market niche (entry-level luxury).
