Slovakia to Welcome Christian Migrants but Reject Muslims; Insists It Is Not Discrimination

The government of Slovakia has said it will take in struggling migrants from Syria and other countries under a European Union scheme to share the burden of 40,000 new arrivals to the continent, but stipulated it will only be taking Christians, and not Muslims.

"We want to help Europe with the migration issue. We could take 800 Muslims but we don't have any mosques in Slovakia so how can Muslims be integrated if they are not going to like it here?" interior ministry spokesman Ivan Metik said, arguing that the policy is not discriminatory.

"We want to really help Europe with this migration wave, but … we are only a transit country and the people don't want to stay in Slovakia," he added.

BBC News reported that the migrant crisis in the EU reached record highs of 107,500 in July, with more and more people coming in, fleeing instability and poverty.

Over 240,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean this year, reaching the shores of Greece and Italy before being reallocated to other countries.

The U.N.'s refugee agency has said that aid is needed for all the migrants. Babar Baloch, Central Europe spokesman for the UNHCR, responded to Slovakia's decision: "Resettlement is greatly needed for many refugees who are at extreme risk among the world's most vulnerable groups."

"We encourage governments to take an inclusive approach while considering refugees for resettlement and should not base their selection on discrimination."

Slovakia is predominantly a Roman Catholic country, according to the CIA Factbook, with non-Christian faiths making up only a minority of the 5.5 million population.

The Telegraph added that Slovakia is set to host 200 migrants under the EU plan, and will ask new arrivals to state their religion.

The rising tide of immigration to Europe has also stirred the question of community and religious cohesion, especially in countries like Germany, which has said it expects to receive as many as 800,000 asylum applications this year.

Large anti-Islamization rallies were held earlier this year in German cities, such as events organized by the PEGIDA movement, a German abbreviation for "Patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the West."

While Pegida's supporters have said that Muslim migrants are having a negative effect on society and changing the country's culture, counter-demonstration rallies for unity have accused the movement of spreading anti-immigrant xenophobia.

we discriminate against consuming spoiled food....driving on flat tires..and any number of other matters which could be detrimental to us.

we discriminate in favor of rational choices, as a rule.

the concept of discrimination has been wildly misconstrued to be a vile negative thing. Its isnt,

Syrian Muslim refugees in Sweden chased away Christian refugees from Syria.

You try to help these people and then they stab you. They are absolute demons.

What happens when the world runs out of Christian countries to run to?

The Slovaks are practical people. I grew up around them.

More power to Slovakia and their common sense!

Slovakia gets it. So do Poland & Bulgaria.

What does Eastern Europe know about Muslims that thickheaded Western Europe doesn’t?

Let’s be honest. It is like “discriminating” against a cobra in favor of bunny rabbits.

I went to a party last year put on by my wife’s co-workers. I knew one woman was Iranian and had my guard up. We got to their apartment and low and behold there are crosses up on the walls in every room and a painting of the last supper prominently in the living room. Turns out they are Christian Iranians run out by the Shiites. Great people, industrious spiritual and great sense of humor. The husband took me outside and taught me how to smoke a hookah. All in all I had a great time and made new friends.

Let's be honest -- IT IS DISCRIMINATION.

Damn straight. Sane and intelligent people discriminate all the time. Heck, "discriminating" (as an adjective) used to be a compliment. In this case, they're discriminating decent folk from mohammedans, and excluding the latter. Doing otherwise would be stupid.

RE: What does Eastern Europe know about Muslims that thickheaded Western Europe doesn’t?

They are geographically closer to what was then, the Ottoman Empire.

It was a Polish-Lithianian general, Jan Sobieski (Later King of Poland ) who led the West to victory in the Battle of Vienna. Had the Muslims won, ALL of the Europe would be Muslim today.

I have always felt that discrimination was a very good thing; it keeps us from doing stupid unnecessary dangerous stunts, keeps us away from ignorant dangerous people, keeps us away from dangerous places.
It is a valuable survival trait that unfortunately a lot of our citizens seem to have lost due to PC thought patterns.

the very use of the word seems to create some rather “pavlovian” responses in a fair sized slice of humanity!

sixty years ago... an automaker might have used this as a Headline!

Discriminating Drivers Prefer.....Rolls Royce....[ your brand name here ]

Today...were virtually ORDERED Not to “discriminate”....as though doing so was like yelling fire in a theater
