It is tempting to dismiss the latest anti-choice salvo from Ohio lawmakers, which would criminalize abortions based on a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome, as a blatantly unconstitutional ploy that would never be enforced.
That would be a mistake. The bill stands a disturbingly good chance of approval this fall by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature
A similar bill passed in North Dakota in 2013 bans abortions on the grounds of fetal genetic anomalies, including Down syndrome. The law has not yet been enforced — under existing Supreme Court precedent it is hard to see how it could be — but as with so many restrictions on a woman’s right to choose, that is not the only measure of its power. In fact, a significant majority of women who receive a fetal diagnosis of Down syndrome choose to abort their pregnancy. A smaller percentage choose to carry the fetus to term. In both cases, it is a personal decision.

Well of course they deserve life.
This is justified along the same lines as sex-selection abortion. It is discrimination to decide to abort based on handicap. If the woman doesn’t want a pregnancy, she can end it, but she can’t discriminate based on disability or sex.

Only a small percentage of abortions are due to severe fetal abnormalities, and this is the one ground for abortion that most Americans agree on. Forcing these pregnancies to come to term would place innumerable hardship on families, and the children themselves.

I would say I probably insulted my Kraut Catholic SIL & BIL. (The “Kraut” think is still a sore point with me. Daddy was shell-shocked from combat in WWII.) I’ve never mistreated Kraut SIL; but I am still a realist.
I kept my Downs baby & did the best I could in the situation.
Maybe I’m just drunk on all this “Protestant” power; in which case, that’s God’s call.

I disagree, have had close friends and family raise Down’s Syndrome children and they say it has brought them great joy. Is it extra work and heartache? Yes, but many of our children that have no genetic or medical issues can still bring us extra work and heartache. Children who become drug addicts, alcoholics, and/or make poor choices in life also cause extra work and heartache for their families.
There are no guarantees of perfect children, nor should there be.
WOW you are over the top judgemental. Funny we have friends with DS children and had one in the family until he passed away a couple years ago, not a Catholic in the bunch.
And the children themselves??
This was OUR child, Maximilian Theodore, which means, "Most Excellent Gift of God".
He was born on Valentines Day in 1986. He was like a Valentine from God to us. He passed away suddenly on Oct. 6, 1988. He was one of the most loving, beautiful persons I have ever had the honor of knowing. Thinking of him I will just ask that you take your ignorance, your gall and your lies somewhere else.
