I think he should have to deal with the incident as would any other citizen. Being a former mover and shaker is wonderful and due all respect, but not even they should be permitted to cross certain social and legal lines.
Fighting with police is also a big no-no. I have respect for his service, but I would advise him to apologize to all involved, and meekly accept the legal consequences of his behavior.
Perhaps the judge will grant him leniency.

At 84 years old and given his military history, I'm willing to chalk it up to a possible onset of dementia.
