Traitor to His Class ... Trump's embrace of a tangible American nationalism

Traitor to His Class: Nothing is more terrifying to the elite than Trump’s embrace of a tangible American nationalism

Donald Trump is not a serious candidate. Donald Trump is not a serious man. The truth of these statements is supposed to be self-evident. But one begins to wonder, are they true?

Trump’s popularity, while beyond doubt, is treated not as a legitimate expression of popular will but as a mass psychosis to be diagnosed. It would seem to be the duty of every American pundit today to explain the inexplicable and problematic rise of Donald Trump. The critical question, however, is not the source of Trump’s popularity but rather the reason his popularity is so shocking to our political culture. Perhaps Trump’s candidacy threatens a larger consensus that governs our political and social life, and perhaps his popularity signifies a profound challenge to elite opinion.

Why is Donald Trump so popular? Explanations range from mere celebrity, to his adoption of extreme positions to capture the most ideologically intense voters, to his explosive rhetoric. These explanations are not entirely wrong, but neither are they entirely right.

I think most just read the title. I see it as being pro Trump.

Agree on both counts. Titles are usually not written by the author and are used as an attention grabber.

Yes I agree. And why I said in the ‘ballpark’; thinking some what along the same lines and using the same headline “Traitor to His Class” - betraying the “movers and shakers” but the articles very much differ from one another.

The New York Times article in their sneering way want the Repub “elite” to somehow and expect them to take Trump out.

A brilliant piece. Straight up and right on. I used the cool email feature to contact the writer, and asked him to send a copy fast, to McConnell, Boehner, McCarthy, Donner and Blitzen.

“Virtu, as opposed to the Christian virtues, includes pride, bravery, civic humanism, strength and an amount of ruthlessness.”

Exactly. I believe the writer has significant understanding.

Look again. A few of us did look past the headline, including yours truly. :)

On most articles you can skip the first few comments because its joke-sters responding to the title and trying to be clever. Its a common dynamic on most chat/discussion forums.

Not a bad article, but I think it misses on some level.

I like Donald Trump, because he knows exactly where he stands with the press and treats the press according to the way the press treats him.

Ask Trump a stupid question? Trump blows you out of the water.

Try to butt in and talk over other people because “you’re somebody?” You get shown the door.

Donald Trump has tapped into the collective fury someone like myself has with the likes of John Boehner and Mitch McConnell.

For me, Donald Trump is a massive thumb in the eye to the GOPe as represented by Boehner and Mcconnell.

I disagree with some of Trump’s positions, but, if, for some reason, Trump is elected, there’s a chance a few policies I agree with will actually be put in place.

I cannot say the same about McConnell and Boehner.

"Traitor to His Class”

Read the article, it doesn't mean what you think it means.

Donald is a traitor to his class, and it is to Americas good fortune.

I think also that even if I don't agree with a policy he may push I can feel comfortable that we both want the same thing. We both want is best for America.

That is not something I have really felt confident in for a while.

I say this through gritted teeth and my nose pinched. In his own way he’s channeling Reagan. He’s unapologetically pushing a nationalistic view of America. For that I’m cheering him even if I disagree with many of his policies. Would that other candidates knew how to project this.

I read just the excerpt.

Substitute Obama for Trump there and the writer nails it.

The writer obviously has no understanding of real Americans.
