U. Wisconsin official: let's stop prosecuting shoplifting
Campus Reform ^ | Aug 24, 2015 | Peter Fricke

Posted on 08/30/2015 8:07:44 AM PDT by george76

Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, says his comments were not an endorsement of shoplifting.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison official claims laws against shoplifting are just an excuse to over-police minority communities.

“I just don’t think that they should be prosecuting cases… for people who steal from Wal-Mart,” said Everett Mitchell, director of community relations for the university, during an on-campus event. “I don’t think [with] Target or all them other places, them big box stores that have insurance, they should be using the fact that people steal from there as justification to start engaging in aggressive police practices, right?”

...

Mitchell, a former assistant district attorney, offered shoplifting as an example, suggesting that communities of color may prefer that police refrain from enforcing laws against theft from large retail chains because responding to such crimes leads to an increased police presence in neighborhoods where shoplifting is prevalent.

Mitchell also noted that police generally defend their actions by saying they are merely directing their focus toward high-crime areas, but rejected that explanation, saying, “they do that all the time to justify why they’re going to over-police our children.”

Murder also draws police to minority neighborhoods more often than to white neighborhoods, so why don’t we just stop arresting people for murder. I guess that in a lot of places, most murders go unsolved, so you can say that they have stopped arresting people for it.

Blacks are just looking for a free pass to steal. Then they wonder why there aren’t more stores in their neighborhoods.

Everett Mitchell started off by saying a very intelligent thing: “I don’t think.” He should have stopped there. I’m sure the director of community relations gets a six figure salary. He therefore must be insured, in which case I don’t think the police should respond to any calls he makes. What he says is extremely racist: “neighborhoods where shoplifting is prevalent.” Is he suggesting that “communities of color“ are prone to shoplifting? “Target or all them other places” - is he a former English professor? Insurance does not pay for shoplifting. The loss is passed on to the consumer.

Gosh, here’s a great idea, how about you handle your community’s problem with committing crimes to save the police the hassle?

Over policing? Stop treating everyone else’s stuff as being yours. Problem solved.

There has been an effort in recent years for large chain stores to urge shoppers to use their web sites to make purchases and either pick up the merchandise in store or have it shipped to them. I have no problem with that; I love shopping online. I made a purchase a few weeks ago; ordered online on Sunday, walked into the store on Monday and the clerk brought me my items. Ten minutes, tops.

Less risk of things disappearing from shelves in the online shopping model. If stores move to “only available online for pick-up in store or shipped to your home”, then I guess the Everett Mitchells of the world will whine about “stuff deserts” that discriminate against “five finger discounters.”

Then you FORCE them to stay open in your neighborhood.

If it moves tax it. If it keeps moving regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

Detroit had a public schools superintendent who couldn’t read. He had a college degree, but couldn’t read.

He was of a favored color group.

Actually, what this guy is saying is fairly common in some liberal circles. I’ve been told by liberals that crime is no more prevalent in minority areas than it is in white areas. According to these liberals, if law enforcement policed the white suburbs the way they do the central cities, there would be no difference in the crime rates.

They are right, if they paroled white suburbs like they do inner cities, then car break ins and burglaries as well as strong arm robberies would plummet - minorities are purposely going to suburbs to commit property crime as it is less likely that they will be caught there.

Talking about “them” stores like that is cracker talk. That’s a microaggression.

Go to the campus bookstore and get more for much less. Such a deal!

That is a racket that the mob would look at with envy. I remember being poorer than a churchmouse and having to charge five hundred bucks of books to my credit card for one semester.

And then they would do me the great honor of buying them back the next year for $50. Unless they had been discontinued because the professor wrote a new textbook that he forced his students to buy.

I didn't have internet then. There must be a way to find used copies of these books dirt cheap on Ebay, Amazon, somewhere.

I noticed the left wants the “poor” to waltz right in and take what is “rightfully” theirs from the “oppressors “ who earn their money legally.

Being on the other end of the spectrum, I believe they should be publicly caned.

Pay per view, cash accounts only, NO EBT accepted.

Because most Americans are exhausted from their day job, or elect not to be involved in physical labor, the canning crew will be selected from the nearest Home Depot parking lot.

To defray event cost, there will be telephone voting ($.50 ?) for the events CANE MASTER. Unfortunately taxes and expenses will be deducted; the CANE MASTER will receive a percentage of the take, but will be first pick for the next event.
For an additional fee the tele voters may add or subtract from the proscribed count.
Tickets will be sold to a selected and thoroughly searched studio audience.

The Cane men, women, whatever... may wear a mask of their choosing.

A standard Royal Navy cat o’nine tales will be used.

Step 5. After the stores close down in those areas, they will come to YOURS in your area.

Unintended consequences indeed...

From this guy's bio at the University web site...

He went on to Princeton Theological Seminary where he earned a Masters of Divinity in Christian Ethics and a Masters of Theology in Social Ethics.

Social Ethics degree, huh, and we shouldn't prosecute STEALING?

Then the bio says this:

Mitchell is pastor of Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church in Madison, Wisconsin.

He apparently has had a change of heart:

Statement by Everett Mitchell

lol. I dont even understand 90 percent of the new terms used to attack us “crackers” :)

And since the chances of me having to worry about a black person being in a position to hire me, I dont care :)

Although my first boss in my field, a black woman, was very cool and laid back. She was married with the kids coming after the marriage. She was an exception.

It was my first graphics job. Maybe 8 black women and me. All good workers. It broke my heart to hear them talk about their “man’ or their hope to meet just ONE man without a record and wtih a job.
