What they haven't calculated is that there are more than ample stupid lottery ticket buyers who expect to win $25K or more and sales may be affected accordingly.
When you buy your ticket always specify cash value and not the many year payoff.
Yup. Better to take the big tax hit all at once than to take an ever increasing tax hit over many years.
If you have all the money in hand you can move it around and keep it safe for yourself. Find a good financial advisor and listen to him.
Perhaps if they make buying lottery tickets mandatory, with a steep tax penalty for people who refuse to do so
Next time check the “lump sum” box (take the money and run)
Government doesn’t play by the rules it makes for us. Why we need to chop government down to size.
Sounds like they are following the financial advice of Congress in regards to social security.
Except that’s what they’re saying they can’t do. They can’t write a check over $25,000. So why not write them a $25,000 check every month instead of giving them nothing?
How about 10 checks of 25k each?
Anyway, the salaries of Rauner’s staff and the state leg are an insignificant drop in the bucket. Cutting them would be window dressing.
Everyone knows it’s the damn pensions that are raping us, and the POS state constitution won’t allow us to do anything about it.
“Am I reading this wrong?
The article seems to me to be saying not that there are insufficient funds, but that due to a $25k limit without a budget, they cant legally cut the checks. No indication that that would continue once a budget was in place. No indication that they dont have an account accumulating funds with which to pay these large winners.”
No, you are not wrong . . . but too many of our readers are having a Pavlovian reaction instead of relying on the reading comprehension they supposedly learned in ‘the good old days’.
Jake Blues: I hate Illinois Politicians.
The number of FRs initiated back in the day (prior to 2000) certainly is dwindling.
Those were the times we had to walk uphill to post on FR, BOTH ways. aaahhhh, yup.
Whaaaaat? The stupid lottery is NOT set up to be self-supporting?
Trump is more right than he thought. These idiots can’t run ANYTHING successfully!
I don’t think it will help. There’ll just be a different set of ‘RATs running the new government. ‘RAT management is the CAUSE of ALL these failures; schools, infrastructure, election fraud, over-taxation, healthcare, lotteries; you name it. Wherever these flops are taking place, you’ll find a long history of ‘RAT governance.
And NYC Off Track Betting can’t make any money either.
seems like they could cut multiple $25k checks.
I was in favor of the lottery when it started in California. The amount of money they bring in is rather small in the scope of things.
It was done to help education. It’s a drop in the bucket, basically.
Yeah yeah yeah... Rauner LOVES to cry about how he has NO CHOICE but to kill funding for Joe Six-Pack who is struggling, while Rauner magically finds TONS of cash so his staff and cronies can live like royalty. There is zero reason why his "Deputy chief of staff for public policy" needs $138,000, which is especially laughable when scumbag traitor Quinn's guy got only $98,000 for the same job.
Rauner's "Deputy governors" not only are overpaid with six figure salaries, they're overpaid if they got $1 for their "services". The office is useless and any Republican governor who was serious about "shaking up Springfield" would abolish the post immediately upon taking office. (and don't get me started on the moron Republican in the state legislature who thinks we should abolish the Lt. Governorship INSTEAD of all the useless offices)
I'll believe Rauner is serious about "painful cuts" and "sacrifice" when he practices what he preaches. Seems everyone in the state has to "sacrifice" EXCEPT his pals and yes-men.
Exactly my point about Rauner blah blah blahing about "painful cuts" to services for ordinary citizens, while his staff enjoy extremely generous, luxurious salaries and perks. I'm reminded of that disgraced Detroit mayor who was having taxpayer funded diamond stud earnings and stripper parties at the mayor's mansion while the city was going broke and going belly up. It's only a small percentage of the overall budget, sure. But it speaks volumes when politicians have one set of rules for themselves, and another everyone else.
