Why Is This Northern Pike Neon Green? Experts Have Answers

It’s not nuclear mutation or a new species, so that rules out the more interesting answers, but why is this northern pike fluorescent green? Canadian angler Randy Straker caught this bizarre-looking fish from Great Slave Lake in Canada’s Northwest Territories on Sunday, but he still has not figured out what gave the fish its strange color.

“The whole top of the fish had a different green,” he told the CBC. “If you look at the mouth, it looked like green lipstick. It was so bright.”

Straker was fishing with a friend, Craig Thomas, and neither men immediately noticed the fish’s odd coloration due to their sunglasses. Yet when Straker moved to bring the pike in, he stared down the fish’s mouth and noticed that its throat was a startlingly bright green. It was like nothing he had ever seen before.

Why does one keep a pike? To hang on their fences like we do gar and huge catfish heads in the Hill Country?

I'm sorry, I was up there with Craig last week, and put ten gallons of green food coloring into the lake. It was supposed to be a prank on Straker, but things spiraled out of control.

j/k

I wished I had time to drop a hook or two.. My fault.. I couldnt stand the peace and quiet.. Of a wind swept lake.. A county fair.. .. I planted my oldest brother.. In a wind swept plot..next to mom and dad and mom 2 and number two brother a screaming eagle ..

They both loved fishing..

Some of the most common theories were that the fish was affected by pollution

Idiots. All that heavy industrialization on the shores of the Great Slave lake is polluting the water. LOL

It’s a Great Green Pike!

Put an oxygen bottle in his mouth and a bourbon bottle in my hand and I’ll get rid of him.
