Just the opposite has happened to me. My kid was on a club soccer team and 3/4 of the players parents were from Mexico and Central America. At one practice, 5 of the Dads were talking along the sideline, and as I approached the group, they all switched from Spanish to English before they even acknowledged me.
It's much worse for the Jeb campaign than that. Think about it. Trying to make a joke about good personal hygiene reinforces an unfortunate stereotype about Mexicans.
Btw, I don't know where you're at but I can assure you, that isn't the norm in the southwest. So much so there has been a million complaints to stop this in the work place due to all the complaints from English only speakers.
It's totally disrespectful to the folks who have to endure this in a workplace environment day in and day out.

I experience that every time I visit a store in Chula Vista (just south of downtown San Diego) or elsewhere in south San Diego (parts of San Diego start right across the border in San Ysidro). Not only do employees speak Spanish to each other (some undoubtedly have to, not knowing English), but PA announcements are sometimes made in Spanish. I'll name the store where it's done: "Food For Less" in Chula Vista.
Yes. WHile teaching English at a high school, the admin asst gossiping with co workers in Spanish.
Just got let go for not exalting the Spanish speakers. In some places in tX they are supposed to be treated better than everyone, get tha? Better. More admissions to college, more scholarships more job opportunities, and they are BETTER. They have their won cabal.
Grew up in NY. In the early days of career, if the Filipinos were yakking away , it was just a look, and they’d apologize and go back to English. That’s normal.

People have quit jobs and careers over it too. And it only escalates. In fact many have actually been terminated from employment for complaining about it. Of course the HR departments use other concocted reasons as to why these people were terminated.
America is broken and needs to be fixed.

Remember, it’s government who’s perpetrating all of this. The greedy employers go along and protect them as they have vested interests....$$$. Just get rid of those doing the complaining. We have reached this point.
