I think this is really on point. I don’t think people are “fooled” that Trump is a conservative. I don’t think for most of his supporters it matters a single little bit if he is a conservative or not.

People support Trump because he is a do-er. He makes things happen.

People support Trump because he is a fighter. He doesn’t apologize for having opinions that others (particularly in the media) don’t agree with.

People support Trump because he wants America to be number one. He is a rejection of the Obama mentality that there is no, and should be no, American exceptionalism.

And conservatives have to face facts. We have backed conservative after conservative, often putting them through ridiculous levels of vetting in even the smallest utterance of speech going back decades, and it has led to liberals having more and more power.

Keep doing the same thing and expecting different results? Insanity.

I will be voting for Ted Cruz in my primary. I will work toward introducing other people to Cruz. But I will be cheering Trump in his destruction of the media and the GOP establishment.

My take of the whole thing has been that small government conservatism, which I profess, is dead for the foreseeable future. Our arguments for small government, free markets has been a failure. The vast majority of Americans, including those who consider themselves conservatives, reject the notion. What I am seeing is a longing for the New Deal past. It is not Reagan's America that people want, it is Harry Truman's and Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson's America that people want. The Jeffersonian ideal has no appeal anymore. FDR's vision remains king.

Ditto here.

In 2016, the GOP POTUS nominee must come from the FIGHTER CAUCUS (yes, RedState, but the theme is well articulated. I would replace Jindal with Trump)

Which conservatives have been backed, at the national level? I see only pseudo-conservatives.

“Do-er” or not Trump is popular-du-jour because he is a “say- er”

He is saying what some of you want to hear

Not much different from Mr Hope and Change

Yeah this is distilled brilliance by Rush. He nails it.

I remember back to the election of Pope Benedict XVI. We traditional Catholics were stunned that this intellectual giant of conservatism—whom people said flat out could never get elected—now held the reigns of power. But soon the curia and Vatican politics started eating away as his reign like acid. He did some tremendous things, but he seems to have been completely hamstrung by bitter hostility by liberals in the Vatican. Benedict has a very academic disposition. As such, as brilliant as he is, there was a limit to what he could accomplish.

I like Cruz. I like Paul. But even if they win, how effective will they be with the current GOP party machinery? They still have their donors to satisfy, no?

Trump may not be square with all my issues. I don’t even like him much personally, and his theology is atrocious. But dang it, he FIGHTS.

(I’m not singling you out, Anitius. I’m only replying to you because you;re the first to express this- yet again.)

Your post- & the many like it, reminds me of the Scripture ‘’those who have ears. let them hear…because hearing, they do not hear & seeing, they do not see’’.

Y’all acknowledge that Trump is saying what needs to be said- & most of us know that, if elected, Trump WILL DO everything in his power (which is a lot, btw- & i don’t mean ‘’pen & a phone’’, like 0bama)…
And yet you turn right around & say that you will cast your vote for a man who not only will not say the kinds of things Trump says, but has actually *done the opposite* of what both Trump says *& what [your candidate] has himself said*.
It comes out of *your own mouths* & yet you don’t follow it.

I am going back to lurk now- & eventually, not even that. This is sickening & it hurts my relationship with the Lord (of course, it is NOT Him, but I am barely praying & haven’t been to church in weeks, now. I know you don’t mean to, but you discredit the Word of God.) to see people who profess to be Christians engaging in such behavior.

You just described my support for Trump. There are ideological class room theory conservationism and then there is real life in the trenches conservationism. Trump is a real world conservative and by real world I mean the business sector.

You know that classic line from Ghostbusters? “Personally I like the university. They gave us money and facilities. We didn’t have to produce anything. You’ve never been out of college. You don’t know what it’s like out there. I’ve worked in the private sector. They expect results.”

There needs to be an America before there can be a CONSERVATIVE America.

A conservative no-mans-land is a contradiction in terms.
