... Yes, I know that there are plenty of decent and honorable people who support Trump. For instance, my friend John Nolte over at Breitbart is one. He constantly celebrates Trump because Trump has all the right enemies and defies the conventional rules governing politics and media: ...
But this is not an argument for Trump as a serious presidential candidate. It is really no argument at all. It is catharsis masquerading as principle, venting and resentment pretending to be some kind of higher argument. Every principle used to defend Trump is subjective, graded on a curve. Trump is like a cat trained to piss in a human toilet. Its amazing! Its remarkable! Yes, yes, it is: for a cat. But we dont judge humans by the same standard ...
If I sound dismayed, its only because I am. Conservatives have spent more than 60 years arguing that ideas and character matter. That is the conservative movement I joined and dedicated my professional life to. And now, in a moment of passion, many of my comrades-in-arms are throwing it all away in a fit of pique. Because Trump fights! ...

Me too.
I don't see why that means every wanka-blogger's opinion on the topic is valid.
I’m just happy that Trump brought illegal immigration to the forefront.
The last 3 ‘approved conservative’ candidates weren’t worth the powder and lead to get rid of them.
They’re becoming like the pure Libertarians. They can fit their convention in a Roy Rogers at New Jersey Turnpike rest area but they are right galldarnit! In the meantime the Dems win and win and win and the country goes down the toilet.
And the cat came back the very next day.
Jonah Goldberg isn’t a wanka-blogger. He’s a senior editor at National Review.
I’m glad Jonah is still dismayed and I’m glad he’s still writing about it. He continues to reveal what a pathetic, wanna-be pundit he is, and has quickly descended into irrelevance.
Gotcha.
He's MISTER wanka-blogger then.
Note to Jonah.......WE DON’T CARE
we want somebody who ACTUALLY does something in DC..and Donald is it...after this election you can get a job at Trump Tower as a burger flipper perhaps?

I’ve noticed that his mother’s site is very careful about Trump but they don’t appear to be supporters.
And Lucianne’s little boy!
Well, dummy—after so many years of outright betrayal—what didja expect???
Goldberg acts as if there is some highly moral, near perfect bunch of conservative politicians out there and Trump just came along and be-spoiled the highly ethical and admirable system them have been bestowing upon the American people.
In reality, Republican voters have been lied to so often, and misled and seen campaign promises broken so often, that most Republicans in DC have become the most despicable, disgusting bunch of low lifes gathered in one spot in recent decades.
What a shock that people are sick of it and are drawn to someone who identifies the problems and offers solutions that no Republican candidate has had the backbone to offer in recent political history.
Many aren’t in the mood to give the same old liars and political con men just one more chance. Goldberg just sounds more ridiculous every time he puts out a new spiel.
Mark Steyn was absolutely right on this. They do NOT want to fight, let alone win. They just want to have their little platform for policy ideas---that NO ONE WILL EVER ADOPT because we never win. I'm almost to the point that I think they are getting like the commies who don't want their policies tested because they would fail.
I get everything the Jonah is saying, the problem that Jonah is missing is that much of the Trump movement isn’t about Trump, that’s why people give him a pass on so much.
The Trump movement is about the utter contempt that the GOP constituents have for the GOP leaders in DC.
Jonah wrongly characterizes it as “venting”. It was venting 4 and 8 years ago. It’s no longer venting, the people have assessed the situation and have decided that for all of Trump’s problems that Jonah have pointed out, he’d *still* do less damage to the country as a President than the current President and leaders in Congress have done and will continue to do.
They are done venting, they are staging an insurrection.
In short, they are all for bashing imperfect candidates while waiting for Godot.
But Trump really, really scares them all because unlike Cruz, he can win, and unlike Cruz, he won't necessarily be bound by the whims of the Washington/GOP establishment. In other words, he can really effect a change---and that terrifies them.

And so the Trump support is not just that illegal immigration is the "#1 issue." It's that here is a very clear litmus test on whether someone can still do ANYTHING. Trump has convinced most of us he'll build the wall and start kicking out illegals. If he, or anyone, could do that, it would go very far in convincing a majority of Americans that their government still can work.
