Clearly none of those critical of his statement have even set foot on a military school campus.
I spent 3 years at one and it was the best experience in my education. One of my classmates joined the army as enlisted afterward and he said boot camp didn’t hold a candle to our military school experience.
So before you fire off criticisms, at least know what you’re talking about.
You would be correct, they were usually staffed by military or retired military as well.
Makes Trump more understandable; the sixties were not a good time to be in an old time military academy.
And Hillary wore combat boots in New Haven when and after attending Yale Law School. She claimed she wanted to be a Marine once two.
And I resent being called “those people” by an inarticulate person who dodged the draft during the Vietnam War because of a made up condition that was miraculously cured in 1973 when the draft ended.
I’m sure he greased a few palms in his day
Because he's a braggart? Trump has made above average returns on his money but he's done it by using heavy leverage. He got himself into serious financial trouble in the 1990s and came very close to losing everything. He would have done just as well investing in an index fund on margin for the last 50 years, and sat on his ass.
I suggest he go to a vet who did two or three tours in Iraq or Afghanistan over a five year period and say, "I know just how you feel. I was in military school for five years."
He didn't serve. When the opportunity to serve came up he avoided service through deferements. That's not an automatic strike against him since I don't think any of the other GOP candidates were in the miltiary either. But for God's sake admit you didn't and don't pretend you did.
When you're Donald Trump then everyone falls into one "those people" category or another.
After what's been in the White House for the last seven years, I'll take it. Not exactly very many military types in this race.
Yep. Another shot, another miss.
Weird.
The arrogance of this man is stunning. We don't need another Obama
Once you get past basic training or, in my case, OCS, and certain other schools like Jump School, the Army is disciplined but not strict like an academy. So, yes, five years in an academy under constant supervision and enforced discipline, especially during the formative teenage years, can be like being in a peacetime military. I’m voting for Donald Trump!
The only ones who will see this as an issue already don’t like Trump.
Sure, it would have been better if he’d simply described some of his experience—but maybe he does have to connect the dots for enough people in order to get the message through.
His admiration for those who did serve seems always to come through anyway.
Not everybody who goes to military school decides to make the military a career. There's nothing wrong or dishonorable about that.
When I was in the Marine Corps as an enlisted man, I was offered an opportunity to enter the OCS program (Office Candidate School) and pursue a career as a commissioned officer. I turned it down because I decided military life was not for me and I wanted to get back to civilian life. Does that make me less of a person? I certainly don't think so.
AFAIK, the only one of the candidates with military service is Lindsey Graham.
Even I don’t sleep at a Holiday Inn. The Hilton is my first choice.
He is the epitome of the Yankee.
It’s embarrassing, but he’s good at that and those who like him don’t care if he says dumb things.
Then you have no chance of ever conquering the known world, something Trump could easily do because his Dad sent him to military school, and because.....well because he's Trump.
