The Beginning of the End for Trump: His Sarah Palin Moment
Heff Po ^ | 9/22/15 | Arianna Huffington

Posted on 09/22/2015 10:39:11 AM PDT by upchuck

... moment in the political life of every big-personality, more-sizzle-than-steak candidate when they step across the line of legitimacy, or illegitimacy (depending on your perspective), even for media addicted to the high ratings these candidate-entertainers provide. That moment for Sarah Palin was her Katie Couric interview in 2008 -- the hockey-mom-has-no-clothes revealing from which she, and the McCain campaign, never recovered. In Donald Trump's candidacy -- which The Huffington Post is appropriately covering in our Entertainment section -- the equivalent moment might have just happened.

It was not the moment in the second Republican debate when Carly Fiorina carved him up like an Easter ham with her withering "I think women all over this country heard very clearly what Mr. Trump said" zinger. That drew blood (as did the dramatic 12 seconds she remained silent after her response), but it wasn't fatal. No, historians looking back will peg the beginning of the end of the Trump show to his New Hampshire moment last week. Taking questions at a town hall event in Rochester, Trump listened as an audience member asserted that President Obama is a Muslim, "not even an American." Trump looked the man square in the eye, and declared: "No ... He's a decent family man [and] a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues and that's what this campaign's all about. He's not [an Arab]."

Just kidding. That was actually what John McCain -- the one Trump said is "not a war hero" -- said to a woman at a campaign rally in 2008 who claimed that President Obama was an Arab. What Trump really said was, well, pretty much nothing: "We are going to be looking at a lot of different things and, you know, a lot of people are saying that."

The only 2 reasons I voted in ‘08:

1. Sarah Palin

2. John McCain was ooooold.

IMHO the Democrats fear Trump because he WILL bring some of their voters over to our side.

He is polling 25% approval with black Americans (who don’t like immigration).

He is doing well with Reagan Democrat union workers every time he slams Ford for moving production to Mexico.

We may get a President who is only 60% Conservative. But he can WIN! And he’ll fight like hell for that 60%.

McCain at any age would be a no go for me.

He is one of the most wretched men we’ve had the displeasure of serving in Washington, D. C.

True Americans want what is best for the country and they’re sick of self-serving, power-hungry, hypocritical, amoral politicians from both parties who are out to destroy our nation, destroy our security, and destroy our future.

You weren’t alone. I sat that one out, but Obama was looming large. Many folks supported McCain, despite his open treachery.

There are an awful lot of folks out in the hinterland that have been sitting elections out. They aren’t buying the GOPe McCain schtick any longer.

The GOPe couldn’t care less either. That’s why I’m hawking Trump this year. At least he’s a chance. I’m not voting for another Bush, a Christie, or a Fiorina.

We need to get someone in there. If it’s a guy that seems to know what needs to be done, then so be it.

The others sure don’t seem to get it.

Bush and his ilk will be business as usual. This nation can’t survive more business as usual. It can’t survive more presidents who said one thing and voted totally opposite thinking we wouldn’t mind.

IMO, it’s Trump or bust. Heck, it may be Trump and bust. At least we tried.

We knew what we’d get with the rest of them.

All of this over nothing. I still don’t see how this could possibly hurt Mr. Trump, much less be the beginning of the end of his campaign.

Most people in this country simply could care less about this manufactured “controversy”, and those who do were never going to vote for Mr. Trump in the first place.

“The press had a hand in twisting the truth and projecting their opinion too.”

Many at FR helped. “I like Sarah, but...” and proceeded to tell us just how bad for America she was.

But I agree that Ace “Mav” McCain was the real POS loser.

I still believe he and the GOPe threw it on purpose. Some deal they had; who knows why.

She got in VERY late (the R convention wasn’t held until after Labor Day, latest ever) and she was basically an unknown nationally.

The MSM journ-0-lists got to write her story and they did a great job of making it ugly. Then of course McLame endorsed Obama for President in October and it was all over.

Isn’t the story the concerned citizen who asked this question is a DEMOCRAT plant who’s mission was to inject this nonsense into the campaign.
