All the candidates think they are the next Reagan. Reagan wasn’t without his warts - can we say amnesty? What bothered me about that interview is that Cruz commented that he wouldn’t trash his opponents nor Democrats. That tells me he’ll be more like GWB - not standing up for himself - just let the media paint him as who they want him to be. Not good.
The left has created a version of Reagan that never existed. The comparison needs to be made where taxes were before he came into office and after, not just singling out the one tax increase. If one lowers rates, for example, 25% and then raises them 5%, he’s a tax cutter. Reagan did massive tax reform, and then went back and made a minor increase later in trade for spending cuts. That’s not a tax raiser. I’ve vote for a guy who cuts taxes massively and then compromises with a slight raise later. I won’t vote for a guy who raises already high taxes out of the gates. The left is disingenuous on it’s fake history.
I’m for Cruz from day one, but he should stay away from scum like Colbert.
When ever Ronald Reagans amnesty of three million illegals is brought up the liberals always conveniently leave out how the lying democrats reneged on securing the border!!!
RE: two Reagan policies that likely would preclude him or anyone from winning the GOP nomination now: He raised taxes, and he enacted an amnesty for millions of people in the country illegally. If Cruz is so enamored of Reagan, would he embrace those policies?
1) His so called amnesty was predicated on strict immigration laws. Something that the Democrats promised but refused to help enforce ( doing the opposite instead ).
Reagan looked back at it and called it one of the greatest mistakes he ever made as President.
So, why should we emulate what Reagan calls a mistake?
Reagan was a great President, but even great Presidents make mistakes and this is one of them.
2) Reagan agreed to a small tax hike in exchange for spending restraint and spending cuts. Something the Dems ( who were the majority then ) DID NOT DELIVER.
MORAL LESSON: Democrats lie.
Another Reagan mistake here, which I’m sure he agrees.
So, why emulate 2 mistakes from a great President?
The moral is to LEARN from these mistakes and DO BETTER, not repeat the same mistakes ( which would be insanity ).
Yeah? When was the last time one of those demonrats compromised with a conservative?
I’ve been saying I would never vote for Cruz because he is weak.
Now I have another reason: he is stupid, stupid enough to go on TV with loathsome coprophage Colbert.
Leftists always bring up Reagan’s tax plans. What they don’t understand is that he broadened the tax base which grows revenue faster.
When Reagan tool office, both unemployment and inflation were high. The five pillars of Reagan's economic program were:
1)cutting tax rates for individuals and businesses.
2)cutting regulations
3)controlling welfare state government spending
4)increase defense government spending
5)controlling inflation by controlling the increase in the money supply
His program took effect on October 1, 1981, and was starting to work by May, 1982, which was 7 months rather than seven years for Hussein's plan.
I don’t know why Sen Cruz would waste his time with that crowd. Anyone that thinks Colbert is even mildly amusing is not going to admit they are wrong about anything let alone core conservative prrinciples.
he wasn’t booed over gay marriage- he was booed when he said “i’m for democracy”...
Reagan’s biggest mistake was nominating GHWBush as his vice president. That is like hiring a guy to erase everything you have done once you are gone.
Why right thinking politicians give credence to these liberal bastards is beyond me, as they never gain any votes of that ilk.
Reagan CUT taxes. Liberals like Colbert know this, but they think if they just keep repeating that he raised them, it will make it so.
When Ronald Reagan took office, the top income tax rate was 70 percent (cut from 90 under JFK.) That got cut to 25 percent, then later bucked back up a point of two. The Social Security tax was also increased a good bit, but other taxes were also cut.
As a result, over 20 million new jobs were created and Federal revenues doubled in a decade.
Those are facts, Mr. Colbert.
President Reagan did sign Simpson-Mazzoli, which gave an explicitly one time amnesty to what was then 3-6 million illegals. It was one of his few mistakes. It was supposed to be in exchange for much increased border security — which the Democrats who controlled Congress repeatedly scuttled. IOW, they reneged on the deal and betrayed him.
Now there are 12-20 million illegals, at least, in this country. Amnesty today is a different thing, bad as it was then, and is effectively prohibited by Simpson-Mazzoli.
Did anyone even watch it? The audience booing was barely audible before Colbert told them to be quiet and respect his guest. I can’t think of anyone else that would do that.
One report mentioned that the audience hissed at Cruz which reminded me of an interesting observation by Jay Nordlinger, which is that only liberals hiss. Jay is a classical music critic and attends lots of shows and has witnessed lots of audiences in lots of situations. I find his observation totally believable.
