Conservatives roar as Rubio tells a crowd of Boehner's demise

Conservatives at the Values Voters Summit cheered the coming end of House Speaker John Boehner’s reign, taking credit for the downfall of a man reviled by the right as too liberal to lead.

"Yesterday, John Boehner was Speaker of the House. Y'all come to town, and somehow that changes!" shouted Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the most far-right Republicans in Congress and a regular irritant to leadership. “My only request is, can you come more often?"

Cruz wasn’t the only one winning applause by heralding Boehner’s exit. Marco Rubio cut into his prepared remarks to break the news of Boehner’s plan to resign, and the crowd roared.

The Florida senator and rising 2016 presidential contender, who claims conservative credentials but also an ability to reach more mainstream Republicans, said he wasn’t “here to bash” Boehner or “anyone” but added “the time has come to turn the page and allow a new generation of leaders.”

The rift between conservative and more mainstream Republicans has been playing out for more than four years in Congress and has in no small part driven strategies employed by the 2016 presidential contenders. Boehner's decision to leave Congress gave conservative activists an opportunity to take credit for shifting the GOP further to the right -- and it could prove a useful talking point on the trail for the most conservative candidates, such as Cruz.

Someone tweeted that they booed when Trump referred to Rubio as “this clown.” Did they boo Trump or Rubio?

I don't think it is nice to refer to Rubio as “this clown.”

"The amnesty water boy" would be so much more accurate.

“Sen. Ted Cruz, one of the most far-right Republicans”

Ultra right, arch conservative, radical right, etc.
Ever noticed the worst adjective Democrats get is “liberal” and RINOs: “moderate”?
Politico. What don’t they know? Everything.

An important point Rubio made is that it’s time for a new generation of leaders. The Dems don’t have any and I’d say the average Dem age in the legislature is higher than the GOP age.

Also, their three (count them!) presidential candidates are either well over 70 or pushing 70. The only one the GOP has in that age group is Trump.

It’s interesting that the GOP has attracted and promote younger politicians but the Dems...not so much. Obama didn’t want rivals and Hillary thought t was all hers by right. So they’re paralyzed.

My guess is they were booing Trump, but I don’t know how to tell for sure.

True, yet Reagan was Trump's age and was "younger" in approach, outlook, and energy than Gorbachev, 20 years younger, or Mondull.

I can't believe Trump's energy. He makes younger guys like Bush look like sloths.

This will get nasty and vicious really quickly with an out of the closet liberal in charge. The conservatives need to give him just enough rope.
