A Protestant Response To Pope Francis' Address
Virtue Online ^ | September 24, 2015 | Phillip Melancthon

Posted on 09/26/2015 8:01:14 AM PDT by lqcincinnatus

1] The Roman Pontiff claims for himself [in the first place] that by divine right he is [supreme] above all bishops and pastors [in all Christendom].

2] Secondly, he adds also that by divine right he has both swords, i.e., the authority also of bestowing kingdoms [enthroning and deposing kings, regulating secular dominions etc.].

3] And thirdly, he says that to believe this is necessary for salvation. And for these reasons the Roman bishop calls himself [and boasts that he is] the vicar of Christ on earth.

4] These three articles we hold to be false, godless, tyrannical, and [quite] pernicious to the Church.

5] Now, in order that our proof [reason and opinion] may be [better] understood, we shall first define what they call being above all [what it means that he boasts of being supreme] by divine right. For they mean that he is universal [that the Pope is the general bishop over the entire Christian Church], or, as they say, ecumenical bishop, i.e., from whom all bishops and pastors throughout the entire world ought to seek ordination and [confirmation, who [alone] is to have the right of electing, ordaining, confirming, deposing all bishops [and pastors].

"No kid it was when the word catholic etc..."

My, that's a trifle condescending -- unless of course, you are referring to my irresistible boyish charm?

“. . . but then neither did He found the Roman Catholic Church. . . “

Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo ecclesiam meam.

Sucks being stupid, eh?

So you are both a bigot and incoherent!

I feel sorry for you. A life of hatred must be miserable.

Jesus Christ does not share His glory with any man, only Jesus is the head of His church on earth. But let’s not work to divide ourselves, love the brethren as Jesus loves us. I have good faithful born-again Catholic friends and have other friends who are nominal Christians at best who are part of or have been part of Protestant denominations.

Lord come quickly and help those who are falling away from you.

Thanks for answering my question, betty. Actually, I thought this was not a current answer to a recent papal address, and I did answer my own question. I don't know if you saw Post #36, where I said

"The content of the above article is simply the Augsburg Confession of the Lutheran Church, not a direct rebuttal to anything said by the current head of the Roman Catholic denomination, the Pope Francis (Francis Bergoglio), while visiting the United States in 2015."

And I got one part of that wrong. The Pope is Jorge Bergoglio.

1] The Roman Pontiff claims for himself [in the first place] that by divine right he is [supreme] above all bishops and pastors [in all Christendom].

Golly!

So does the Living Prophet® that lives in an apartment high above Salt Lake City!

Sounds like a good cage fight in the works!

In conclusion let us summarize this grand key, these “Fourteen Fundamentals in Following the Prophet”, for our salvation depends on them.

1. The prophet is the only man who speaks for the Lord in everything.
2. The living prophet is more vital to us than the standard works.
3. The living prophet is more important to us than a dead prophet.
4. The prophet will never lead the church astray.
5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.
6. The prophet does not have to say “Thus Saith the Lord,” to give us scripture.
7. The prophet tells us what we need to know, not always what we want to know.
8. The prophet is not limited by men’s reasoning.
9. The prophet can receive revelation on any matter, temporal or spiritual.
10. The prophet may advise on civic matters.
11. The two groups who have the greatest difficulty in following the prophet are the proud who are learned and the proud who are rich.
12. The prophet will not necessarily be popular with the world or the worldly.
13. The prophet and his counselors make up the First Presidency—the highest quorum in the Church.
14. The prophet and the presidency—the living prophet and the First Presidency—follow them and be blessed—reject them and suffer.

I testify that these fourteen fundamentals in following the living prophet are true. If we want to know how well we stand with the Lord then let us ask ourselves how well we stand with His mortal captain—how close do our lives harmonize with the Lord’s anointed—the living Prophet—President of the Church, and with the Quorum of the First Presidency.

Ezra Taft Benson

Actually, according to the canons of Vatican I, the Pope has temporal power also, so he can talk about politics if he wants to.

OOoooh!

5. The prophet is not required to have any particular earthly training or credentials to speak on any subject or act on any matter at any time.

I guess the site is back home to Catholic bashing. Oh, well.

I'll count your vote as one FOR the present pontiff and his pronouncements.

The “man of sin” is the anti-Christ.

Oh???

These are the only places in the Bible that antichrist is mentioned.

1 John 2:18
Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.

1 John 2:22
Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist —denying the Father and the Son.

1 John 4:3
but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist , which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

2 John 1:7
I say this because many deceivers, who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh, have gone out into the world. Any such person is the deceiver and the antichrist .

“For by grace are ye saved through faith (IN CHRIST); and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8-9)

“For by grace are ye saved through doing the works that Rome requires of you; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of Peter: All of Catholic works, lest any man should boast other than of Rome.” (CCC somewhere)

Still the question remains: Who inserted the [brackets]? And for what purpose?

The word “Protestant” isn’t in the Bible.

We know; it appears to be a word that ROME invented.

Non ad rem, unless you are John the Baptist.

1 Corinthians 1:17
For Christ didn't send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News

We'll leave the water thingy to the Catholics to control.

I’ve noticed many screen names are misleading. I admit to favoring liturgical type churches, but would never be a RC.
