Yes, what a great thing to see a Marine parade!
Well, forgot to include the very first paragraph characters when copying and pasting to you. Threw off the whole thread. Gee whiz!

>>I would love to see one of the Marine parades. So sharp, so proud!!<<
I used to be in marching band. THE definition of precision was diagonals. If you look at a marching band, you may see the verticals (forward to back) as being evenly spaced, and the horizontals (side to side) as also being evenly spaced.
But the only way to know if BOTH are properly spaced is to look at the band diagonally (use this yardstick next Orange or Rose Parade).
The Marines ALWAYS have perfect diagonals! Even for those of use who practiced what seemed like constantly, we could not come close to those diagonals.
Fun marching trivia.

It has an interesting history.
During World War I, the great Polish pianist Josef Hofmann, having settled in Philadelphia, wrote an arrangement of "The Star Spangled Banner" in C Major that was quite bombastic. By using large block chords, he created the sounds of bombs bursting in midair. I learned to play it at age 10 -- my hands were big enough -- and I played it one year to begin my teacher's annual recital.
Sergei Rachmaninov fled the Bolsheviks for America in 1918, put aside conducting opera for piano concerts, and he wrote an arrangement in B-flat that is the opposite of Hofmann's bombast. It's simple and dignified. The chord combination he comes up with for the word "free" is haunting.

But our blessed administration, said that this would complicate the deal. We at one time had them by the short hairs.

Far Flung — Whippany, New Jersey.
Back from downtown Chicago (much more fun).
Next week, OTOH, Mrs. FD and I head back to my ancestral home of Los Angeles for Universal Studios, Universal Halloween Haunt and Disneyland (I can’t believe we didn’t take advantage of that when we were there!)
Then back to NJ for more at the grind.
Maybe I need to use my tagline for the Retirement Countdown: 5.5 years and counting :)
You take good care, OK darlin?

Good evening, Publius, and thank you for Rachmaninov’s “The Star Spangled Banner”.
How is your back? Getting better, I hope.

Piercing the Darkness
September 29, 2015
The Lord will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory.
Isaiah 60:19
I caught my first glimpse of them as a college student. On a frosty, fall night, far from the lights of the city, I was riding on a hay wagon loaded with noisy friends when the sky lit up and colors flashed across the horizon. I was mesmerized. Ever since that night I have been fascinated with the phenomenon called aurora borealis, also known as northern lights. Mostly they are seen far north of where I live, but occasionally they appear in lower latitudes. Having seen them once, I long to see more. Whenever the conditions are favorable, I say to my equally fascinated friends, Maybe tonight . . .
Throughout Scripture, light and glory are used to describe the coming of the Lord. A time is coming when the sun and moon will be unnecessary (Isa. 60:19). And in describing God on His throne, the apostle John wrote, The one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne (Rev. 4:3).
An emerald circle is an apt description of the northern lights. So whenever I see glorious light displays in the skies abovewhether in person or via picture or videoI think of it as a foretaste of what is to come, and I praise God that even now His glory pierces the darkness.
Lord, the world around us is sometimes so dark that it is difficult to see Your power and goodness. Thank You for the reminders that the darkness does not and will not last forever. Help us wait with great expectation for the day when we will see You on Your throne.
Jesus came to give light to a dark world.
In todays passage, Isaiah paints a beautiful picture of what life will be like in Gods eternal kingdom. Using the imagery of light and darkness, Isaiah tells the people of Israel that the presence of God will ensure that their problems will never appear again. It is not that light simply makes problems disappear; it is that in the presence of God, only goodness and righteousness can exist. One day the darkness of our lives will be illuminated by the presence of God. J.R. Hudberg

My lower back is about 50% better today. I have a ways to go before I can stand up straight all the time.
The extra time at the computer sent me into research on "Mack the Knife," which pops up on this weekend's Rockumentary, that brought me to videos of the original German opera and Ernie Kovacs' use of the original to accompany his comedy blackouts. I'll be posting them all this weekend.
Physical downtime can be useful.
