There is a good case to be made that a pure defeat of ISIS is required by all civilized countries.
When Russia is accidentally on the right side of that fight, I wouldn’t take that as a reason to threaten them. That Russia is protecting Assad doesn’t mean we can be sanguine about ISIS. First, defeat ISIS. Then we can continue to discuss or prosecute war against Assad as necessary.
I would have taken Ukraine as a reason to threaten Russia.
So, theatre of battle matters. We should sometimes unite and sometimes oppose Russia, depending on the merits of the issue at hand.
Trumps said he supports letting Russia fight them instead of us in Syria.

Today the news here is that the Russians aren’t hitting territories controlled by ISIS. My question is, how the he’ll can we rely on our intelligence these days to know where ISIS is or to tell us the truth about it? They were even taken by surprise by Russia’s open, blatant takeover and that is embarrassing.

No. Russia is simply doing what all countries do when led by a sane person: protecting their interests. (The USA is not currently led by a sane person.)
The biggest risk to the US regarding Syria is this: obama throws a homo hissy fit and gets us into a shooting war with Russia.
