Years ago, Charles Berlitz wrote a book on ships and planes lost in the Bermuda Triangle. This was reproduced in the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and one day when I had nothing to do I pinpointed all the ships and planes lost.

Only about five were lost in the Triangle. All the others were well outside.
Berlitz even tried to claim that Coach Robert E Rein of Louisiana State had his plane drawn into the “Triangle” by unknown forces.

Yes, the names are in the linked article at the top.

The Capt’s wife made statements the other day very supportive of her husband’s and crews’ abilities and professionalism.

She felt he had found safe harbor somewhere, and was riding it out.

My assumption is that they were hoping to get through it the quickest by going in the opposite path of the hurricane along its edge so it passes by them with minimum of trouble.

The predicted path at the time they sailed had the storm heading straight to Norfolk.

Your assumption is probably correct. as they had already cleared the Bahammas before they ran into trouble.

If the storm had followed the predicted path, they would have been east of the heavy stuff by then.

The storm never turned west after they sailed. it went north and east, right at them.

I do not know anything about seamanship but I do know during hurricane Hugo, which I experienced, many shrimp boat captains manned their boats and went out.

They had a hatch that was taking on water and no power. That’s a huge problem in a hurricane. They had no way of knowing that would happen in advance and they were trying to make a living as sailors on the high seas. It takes a lot of bravery to do that job.

Very sad if they are all lost.

Me thinks the ship’s owners wanted an insurance payout for a shiny new cargo ship. Gotta get the ship sunk first, with little evidence revealing the plot.

I can say as an eyewitness to the fact that everytime (6X) we sailed (Navy ship) through the Bermuda triangle that our steering would just flat stop working and our gyrocompass would just spin in circles. Definately something going on out there.

My father, a graduate of the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and a former Merchant Marine navigator and deck officer, wonders why they did not head south along the Florida coast immediately after leaving Jacksonville. That would have better assured the safety of the ship and crew.

my training says that is an option as well early on. the ship went straight for the storm.

One would think the ship’s crew would be getting continuous weather and sea condition reports to know what they were getting into. With just one engine comes great risk in foul weather.
