Donald Trump defends his vocal support for eminent domain: ‘I think it’s a wonderful thing’
Washington Post ^ | 10/06/2015 | By Jenna Johnson

Even though it's a stance not especially popular with some Republicans, Donald Trump continued to support eminent domain in an interview on Tuesday, calling it "a wonderful thing" that has unfairly received a bad rap.

Trump, a billionaire known for his major real estate development projects, described eminent domain as a useful tool that local governments can use to prevent greedy homeowners from derailing major projects that could create thousands of jobs or provide a public good. Trump said that some conservatives don't fully understand how eminent domain works and don't realize that homeowners are usually paid "four, five, six, ten times" what their property is actually worth.

"Eminent domain, when it comes to jobs, roads, the public good, I think it's a wonderful thing," Trump said during an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier that aired Tuesday evening. "And remember, you're not taking property… you're paying a fortune for that property."

Trump's support of eminent domain, along with his use of the practice professionally, has prompted some criticism from conservatives.Republican presidential rival Rand Paul has slammed Trump over his eminent domain views, calling the mogul “a big fan” of the practice who has “shown no consideration for small private property owners."

The super PAC for the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative advocacy group, recently aired television advertisements in Iowa that accuse Trump of supporting "eminent domain abuse" that would allow him to "make millions while we lose our property rights." Trump said the Club for Growth's attacks have come only because he refused to donate $1 million to their cause. He added that the spots are "not right" and do not accurately explain eminent domain.

How many folks here oppose eminent domain wherein private property is transferred to a private person (corporation) but support the Keystone Pipeline? What about the border wall?

I don’t know of any eminent domain issues around the pipeline but let the locals vote for or aign it same with the wall. maybe a new line for D.

Once they start building it, it's going to cross from the Canadian border across multiple States down to the other end of the country. There will be eminent domain issues.

UN WANTS TO CONTROL OUR COUNTRY AND EMINENT DOMAIN WILL BE A SILLY TOPIC TO THEM. THEY WILL TAKE WHAT THEY WANT FOR PEANUTS OR WHAT EVER...OUR LAND WILL BE THEIRS...

FOLKS THIS IS A SCARY WORLD...
WE NEED A NON POLITICIAN WHO IS NOT INDEBTED TO ANY ONE...WHO WILL DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE FUTURE OF THIS ONCE GREAT NATION.

TRUMP WILL HAVE MY SUPPORT...He is a wealthy man, he does not need this job for FAME OR GLORY...HE WANTS TO MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN...I’M WILL TO TAKE THAT CHANCE...

Indeed.

Go back to his 2000 book.

He proposed gutting out military in Europe.

To get $50,000,000.

He then wanted to take over the building of our schools with a massive federal spending spree.

GOOD LORD!

Trump wanted a widow’s house for a parking lot and she would not sell. it’s her house. nothing to do with eminent domain. Trump used eminent domain law to take her house. in AC he made a lot of money in case you haven’t heard. will this phrase go the way of the kerry phrase “i served in viet nam”
i think he won’t make it to feb.

Poor Mrs. Coking.

The bully put her through a lot of agro

Turns out, the business wasn't there anyway. How much money did aTrump blow on that bad deal?

The adjacent Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino, the property for which Trump wanted Coking's property to begin with, closed on September 16, 2014 due to lack of business.

"Ahhh but that doesn’t matter as long as we keep illegals away."

So you'd rather not apply eminent domain (where necessary) to build a border wall….

Legal quibbling over what does or does not constitute a “public purpose” doesn’t really mean very much in the real world
you lost the argument because you use the word purpose when the constitution says “use”. words have meaning. you seem to be a socialist by my definition.
The public purpose is defined as something a legitimate public entity defines it as.
no

I am sure that Hurricane Sandy didn't help with the businesses along the boardwalk.

I wish Trump would offer me free housing at any one of his properties for LIFE on top of $2 million for my house. I'd jump at the offer, but than people tell me that I'm smart, Ms. Coking not so much.

The Kelo decision was a travesty.

Some States have amended their constitution in order to mitigate the abuse of Eminent domain (see below).

CALIFORNIA’S Proposition 99

Eminent Domain.

Acquisition of Owner-Occupied Residence. Constitutional Amendment. California Ballot Measure - Proposition 99

Election: Primary June 3, 2008 (Primary)

Outcome: Passed

Summary:

Bars state and local governments from using eminent domain to acquire an owner-occupied residence, as defined, for conveyance to a private person or business entity.

Creates exceptions for public work or improvement, public health and safety protection, and crime prevention.

“Trump is not the perfect candidate. There is no perfect candidate”

Bingo. On the eminent domain thing I definitely disagree with him. But that’s one issue out of many. And illegal immigration way outweighs it on my scale.

If you're taking the million and keeping your car, it has nothing to do with eminent domain. That's "the deal". The other 2 holdouts got $1.9 mil and $2.1 mil....no eminent domain involved.

That comes into play when you refuse to take the million.

Like I said, I'm sure the grandson influenced her. She moved in with him shortly after she won in court. And he put the place on the market for $5 mil. After that move didn't work, he lowered the price. Finally, it went on the auction block and sold for half a mil....which probably went to attorneys, taxes and probably a bank...cuz he probably used it as collateral.

I found pictures of a couple of interior rooms. It's a sty....

Eminent Domain is hardly the only thing wrong with progressive Donald Trump. Just because his fans lack the courage to acknowledge them doesn’t make him any less a progressive.

Called Pam Geller an Obnoxious loudmouth who deliberately goaded muslims into attacking her to make money in Garland TX.

Attacked Michelle Malkin for telling the truth about his crony capitalist eminent domain empire.

Supports Obamacare on steroids.

Brags about buying politicians.

Supports bringing in foreign workers as permenant citizens but doesn’t use the term “H1b visa”.

Supports ethanol subsidies and anti free market renewable fuel standards.

Has supported gun bans in the past and is still unclear on them. (Still evolving)

Has held at least 2 different positions on Syrian “refugees”.

Declares gay marriage to be “The law of the land”.

Has switched parties at least 3 times.

Has donated to democrats recently.

Declared Mitt Romney to be “too tough” on illegal aliens in 2012.

Said he would bomb ISIS and take their stuff, now wants Russia to bomb ISIS and we’ll magically take their stuff.

Meets to make deals with union leadership behind closed doors.

Claims he would get money and influence out of politics but Throws names Like Oprah and Warren Buffett out there as potential advisers.

Supports normalized relations with Cuba that will further prop up the Castro regime.

Won’t tear up Obama’s disasterous and illegal Iran nuke deal.

Will tell people what they want to hear but may or may not believe it himself.
