Donald Trump defends his vocal support for eminent domain: ‘I think it’s a wonderful thing’
Washington Post ^ | 10/06/2015 | By Jenna Johnson

Even though it's a stance not especially popular with some Republicans, Donald Trump continued to support eminent domain in an interview on Tuesday, calling it "a wonderful thing" that has unfairly received a bad rap.

Trump, a billionaire known for his major real estate development projects, described eminent domain as a useful tool that local governments can use to prevent greedy homeowners from derailing major projects that could create thousands of jobs or provide a public good. Trump said that some conservatives don't fully understand how eminent domain works and don't realize that homeowners are usually paid "four, five, six, ten times" what their property is actually worth.

"Eminent domain, when it comes to jobs, roads, the public good, I think it's a wonderful thing," Trump said during an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier that aired Tuesday evening. "And remember, you're not taking property… you're paying a fortune for that property."

Trump's support of eminent domain, along with his use of the practice professionally, has prompted some criticism from conservatives.Republican presidential rival Rand Paul has slammed Trump over his eminent domain views, calling the mogul “a big fan” of the practice who has “shown no consideration for small private property owners."

The super PAC for the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative advocacy group, recently aired television advertisements in Iowa that accuse Trump of supporting "eminent domain abuse" that would allow him to "make millions while we lose our property rights." Trump said the Club for Growth's attacks have come only because he refused to donate $1 million to their cause. He added that the spots are "not right" and do not accurately explain eminent domain.

So far no one has died as a result of eminent domain.

Can’t say the same about illegals.

Ultimately property rights and personal rights are the same thing.

The media continues the labor of parsing every syllable that Trump utters searching for a weakness that will resonate. Trump is not the perfect candidate. There is no perfect candidate. Waiting for one will be ultimately self-defeating. But compare Trump to what we have now in the presidency and he would seem to be a gift from the heavens.

For the record, I am hoping Ted Cruz gets the nomination but would certainly vote for Trump if it came down to that.

The developer is paying market value for the property.

Eminent domain is often used to acquire property for public improvements.

In the long run, every one benefits.

Ahhh but that doesn’t matter as long as we keep illegals away.

As Ann Coulter said — she doesn’t care if Trump performs abortion in the White House after his immigration policy.

It was not too many years ago on FR, that if you defended eminent domain, you were SATAN. I will be interested in seeing the reaction to this from Trump’s supporters.

The value is what the owner decides it should be. If a family has a little cabin by a lake that they love, how do they benefit to lose it at a price they didn’t want?

If that is all there is to it, Calvin put us on the road that led to “gay marriage.” They own what they own and that includes their bodies and wheeee!

We can’t dumb down the meaning of humanity that way without suffering. We can lament an injustice without conflating it with the worst thing that could ever happen to humanity.

I have a problem with eminent domain. I saw a wonderful little family business get scooped up that way. However that’s not my 2016 major issue. immigration is. I sincerely hope that Mr Trump will not allow himself to get sidelined this way in future interviews.

Its right there in the Constitution.

Private property can’t be taken for a private end. It must be for a public good.

He’s wrong there. If he doesn’t modify his stance it’s going to cost him votes.

THAT SAID —

In the big picture remember that Trump will make room for conservatives who will finally have found a voice under his umbrella for what is, maybe, 70-80% conservative. The real answer would be a constitutional amendment which, as putative president, Trump would have zero input into.
