Trump, Carson demand that next debate be limited to 2 hours

Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ben Carson are threatening to boycott the next GOP debate over its proposed format, underscoring a rare political alliance between the leading outsider candidates. In a joint letter to CNBC's Washington bureau chief Thursday, the billionaire businessman and retired neurosurgeon told the hosting network they will not appear at the Oct. 28 debate unless it's capped at two hours with commercials and the candidates are allowed to speak directly to the camera at its opening and close.

Stupid move, but predictable.

Less time equals less of a chance for a candidate sitting lower in the polls to break out, but more likely to be excluded altogether.

In other words, they’re chickens.

I thought the debate format from the last 3 hour one was pretty good given the number of people on stage.

Until more people get out, the 2hr format isn’t going to work because the time will end up lopsided and too short.

Anything to stop Cruz I guess. God forbid someone have to answer a question with substance instead of just rhetoric and clever witticisms.

God forbid a candidate actually rise in the polls based on their message and merits. Perhaps if the candidates, and/or their message, that are running in the lower in polls had more appeal to the primary voters they’d be higher and not have to worry about this?

Given the low IQ of most Trumpsters (i.e. Ron Paul retreads)

I'm sorry, I had no idea I was dealing with a child having a tantrum.

Insulting anyone and everyone who supports another candidate is not going to convert them. There are plenty of high IQ people, and well informed people, supporting each of the candidates.

And the polls show clearly that Trump has many more supporters than Ron Paul ever did, as well as showing they come from a wide array of demographics. Many here on FR who support Trump never supported Cong. Paul. Hardly retreads, but it makes a nice bucket to throw people in without bothering to actually do the analysis.

I don’t understand the vitriol. Save it for Hillary.

I think it’s going to be a Trump/Carson ticket. They seem to be working together.

Wait...I thought it was a Trump/Cruz man date because of the “secret” meeting at Trump Tower a few months back.

lol... They could do that with out Trump. If all the 8 or 2 percenters haven't gotten their message out after nearly 5 months of this, they never will anyway.☺

It doesn’t matter how long the Debate is, it’s which Candidates are chosen for questions. The Moderators are all Liberals and they play a game with Republicans every Election season.

Trump and Carson are asking for more than limiting the Debate to two Hours, they want Opening and Closing Statements from all the Candidates on Stage as part of the Format.

That doesn’t sound like something meant to “stop Cruz”. Where did you even come up with that Conspiracy Theory?

Heck, I’m a Cruz Supporter and I have no idea WTH you are even talking about. There should be less Candidates on Stage and they should all be given equal time, period.

I would love to see Ted Cruz as president. He’s conservative, strong, doesn’t “go along to get along” and is a committed Christian.

I fear, however, that these are not the qualifications that the masses are looking at. I think it’s a different population out there, sadly.

It’s still early...the primaries don’t start till Feb and the general isn’t until Nov 16. However, I think Cruz and many of the other candidates were caught totally off guard by the Trump phenomena, and I think Carson has been very fortunate to ride the wave to his advantage. Trump, like him or not, warts and all, has totally turned the political class and “normal” “it’s now my turn” election cycle totally on its head and the pundits, media and establishment have absolutely no idea how to deal with it. They thought he would implode by now, and he may very well get tired of the B.S. and pick up his ball and go home at some point, but in the meantime, it’s a whole new world and I think its a good thing overall. As a comparison to Cruz, they are totally different and unfortunately, Cruz may just be seen as just another sitting U.S. Senator that is more part of the problem than the solution...I know he’s the most conservative, I know he’s brilliant, I know he knows the Constitution, I know he is a devout Christian, but none of those things are resonating with the primary voters thus far. But, like I said, it is early and the Trump phenomena may just be a vent or protest vote at this point. Cruz is setting up a good ground game for the long haul, but it is a tough climb if Trump doesn’t implode. And I don’t think he is going to.

So, how is President McCain doing in your opinion? He has been in office seven years, you must have an opinion. I am a “Trumpeter”, and wouldn’t touch the Pauls - either of them, with a 10 foot pole. Your ASSumption about retreads is off base.

If you have too many on stage, all getting opening/closing statements, then that’s going to take up an hour itself.

Move more to the kiddy table with Bobby.

Exactly, one hour for their Individual Positions and another Hour for the Dog and Pony Show.

Limit it to the Big Six Players. Everyone else stays Home.

The kiddy table?

Are you implying these are fair, honest and unbiased debates run by the honorable people operating the MSM? And all the adults are standing on the professional politician stage?

Really?

If it’s the Kiddie Table, I’m all in. Yum Yum

Given the low IQ of most Trumpsters (i.e. Ron Paul retreads)...

When the leader of your Trumpster PING list says...

All the Trumpsters point to the scoreboard and how Trump ...

yet nobody bothers to explain how it is exactly that Trump accomplishes....

Well...kiddy table implies there is also a table of responsible adults. I don’t think these MSM operated debates would qualify.

It’s funny how some suddenly pop up acting like the MSM is now somehow honest, honorable and reasonable. Funny stuff.

It is noyt so much the length of the debate, but the far too many people on the stage. They should go for the top six at most and cashier the rest. That would be Cruz at 7%, Bush at 7.3%, Fiorina 8.3%, Rubio at 9.9%, Carson at 19.1% and Trump 23.4% per RCP averages.

The rest are all below 3% and are simply not viable enough to command a seat at the Big Kids table. They can have a different debate earlier or even on another day.

Two hours is simply enough with this in mind and eliminating opening and closing statements is a nonstarter for all the candidates as they know all the media is interested in is a food fight and the candidates want at least a few minutes each to speak directly to the country without a media filter.

Trump and Carson are doing Cruz and the rest of the viable candidates a favor. Cruz, Carson & Rubio where barely heard from in over three hours over the last two debates. They had no chance to connect or even get a message across as they where all but ignored by the ‘moderator’ who acted like a moron trying to start a fist fight between Trump and anyone that could be bated by Tapper to take the bait. It was nonsense and silly and would never have bean done to the Democrats who are all in lock step with their fellow Leftists in the press.

Trump and Carson have transformed the election by talking past, around and over the gate keepers in the media and have discovered that they no longer need the exposure as much as the media needs the chance to expose.
