The family of a Michigan teen who flashed a cars brights at a sheriff sergeants SUV and wound up dead filed a wrongful death lawsuit Wednesday.
A complaint on behalf of slain 17-year-old Deven Guilford accuses Eaton County Sheriff's Sgt. Jonathan Frost of unconstitutional violations of privacy and excessive force in a Feb. 28 traffic stop in the rural central Michigan county outside Lansing.
Guilford flashed the headlights of the car he was driving at the sheriff departments new SUV as Frost drove it the opposite way on State Highway 43, according to the complaint. The Ford Explorer had improperly bright or misaimed headlights and Frost had stopped two other drivers for flashing their lights at him that night, the lawsuit said.

One time my uncle flashed his lights to warn about a speech trap. Another cop saw it and decided that my uncle needed a random car safety inspection right then. When they got to the headlight inspection Officer Smartass said “That’s funny, the lights seem to be on nice and steady now.” In the end my uncle’s car passed inspection, he got the sticker to prove it and didn’t get a ticket.
ON a second note, local police here went through a period of driving with their brights on to induce oncoming cars to flash at them whereupon the cars that responded to the cop's brights were ticketed. The sheriff put a stop to that after a few such incidents.
For some tasing just makes them wild.
Cops in some places drive with their brights on to get people to flash at them and get ticketed for it.
Watch the video. Kid got exactly what he deserved.
I had a tailgater highbeaming me one time... had my friend take my 12V spotlight and blind him... that worked.
You’re gonna have Freepers lecture you that you only kill when you pull your weapon
That logic and training is part of the problem
I handle that by adjusting my mirrors so that the light shine somewhere else.
I usually adjust the drivers side on to the down position at night anyway, as my eyes are pretty sensitive to bright light.
Besides, I usually drive too fast for them to keep up.
NO
You may want to update your 1954 set of expectations. In 2015, it is fair to expect that your dog gets shot, your wife stripsearched and raped, your kid's arm dislocated, and you end up shot dead (7 times).
Of course if a cop is way out of line (which never happens), make sure you do nothing to defend yourself. Let the law handle it, they always have the best interests of the citizens in mind.
Does this need a sarcasm tag?
It still looks like the cop’s wounds are self inflicted, his expression speaks volumes. I think his temper was triggered by a defiant teenager, and the results we can see.
Had the citizen not been pulled over, the entire incident would never have taken place.
I’ve been pulled over by cops for bogus reasons on two occasions. I’m still here to talk about it because of how I responded - or didn’t respond.
Unless I’m carrying a gun and the will to use it, I am a rag doll to a physically abusive cop. Period.
Looks self inflicted Vigilanteman, he paniced when he realized he shot the kid and had to have a reason for doing it.
The officer had full discretion to decide not to pull over any of the three drivers.
He chose to pull them over. He chose to use his position to harass law abiding citizens. That is the crime.
The cop followed procedure. He only used force when it became obvious the kid had no intention of complying with clearly expressed orders.
Do you expect the cop to get on his knees and beg the kid to comply?
I could believe “self-inflicted” if he ran full bore into a brick wall on his own. With his own two hands or baton? Heck no..
This guy’s demeanor up until he pulled the kid out of the car was patient IMO.
Same with the "I can't breathe" fat boy in New York. He was a heart attack waiting to happen and brought it on by fighting the cops instead of complying. The difference in that case was his protective coloration, so everyone's heard about Eric Garner's story, including the chokehold lie.
.Gov Troll?
Yep. And you can add this one to your list: A SWAT team will hit your neighbor's house by mistake.
