After a drawn-out showdown between Houston's popular lesbian mayor and a coalition of conservative pastors, voters in the nation's fourth-largest city will soon decide whether to establish nondiscrimination protections for gay and transgender people.
Nationwide, there's interest in the Nov. 3 referendum: Confrontations over the same issue are flaring in many places, at the state and local level, now that nondiscrimination has replaced same-sex marriage as the No. 1 priority for the LGBT-rights movement.
"The vote in Houston will carry national significance," said Sarah Warbelow, legal director of the Human Rights Campaign, a national LGBT-rights group. She noted that Houston, with 2.2 million residents, is more populous than 15 states.

LIV = Low Information Voters. Credit FR for expanding a “blue hair” generation’s list of acronyms. We just used to refer to them as “stupid” or “too lazy to be informed”. Saves me some keystrokes.
LIV? Some but not all. Most of those who will vote yes are the LGBT community and the “do-gooders” who certainly think everything is going to be roses for everyone. One of my friends who lives in Houston is a mental health counselor. She has already received a call from a gay “couple” wanting to see her. She declined as she has no training in that area - the same as she does when she gets a call for someone wanting services for an ADHD child. Couple has filed suit against her. She is going to shut down her practice and refer her patients elsewhere. Suspect we are going to see more businesses close their doors if ordinance passes.
Osteen is "for" everybody and everything. Haven't you heard?
He's "for" the Mayor, and "for" the ordinance, and "for" the people against the ordinance, and "for" cross-dressers, and "for" those who recognize them as phonies, and "for"... yada, yada, yada.
Don't ask him about pedophiles. He'll begin the question with, "you know,..."
There is a State Prop 1, and a City Prop 1.
She can't run again, that's why she tried to force it under the cover of night, without letting anyone vote. TX Supreme Court finally had to smack her down, three times even.
LIV = Low Information Voter
Excellent point! Yeah, that’s what I should’ve asked.
OMG! Guess I didn’t think of that. Is the official vote tomorrow?
I believe early voting is going on now and through the end of this week. Don’t really keep up since we don’t live in the city so can’t vote.
lakewood gets muslim attendees too. osteen is flattered that his sermons may inspire them to be better muslims.
I was telling someone about chrislam and Joel Osteen.
She didn’t believe me.
Thought I was being hateful.
Thinks he’ll save souls.
I doubt that but if he can more power to him.
I’ve got him pegged as a phony though.
Only if it passes. They won't find any "national significance" at all if it fails.
people should ask osteen if christ is the only path to salvation. i imagine osteen would give his ‘i am for loving everyone’ speal.
What is his truth?
99% of what I have seen is pretty much a biblically agreeable view of Christ as Savior from evil (including personal slavery to it). Which is not the same as a moral analysis. Technically one could even commend prayers “for kings and all who are in authority” no matter if they are nice or nasty kings. If this lady ever does come to the Lord, it might be a memory of Osteen through which the Lord makes that call.
Good morality is a result of faith, not the same as faith or the appearance of which can replace faith.
