The U.S. military has many types of aircraft that are developed and fielded for a specific purpose, although many are considered 'multi role.' The F15C is not one of these.
It is specifically an air-to-air machine, designed for air superiority over a battlefield. It's pilots are the part of a dwindling fraternity, the dogfighter.
The aircraft are not deployed in theater unless commanders are worried about an air-to-air threat, in other words, aircraft that can target American attack jets or other support aircraft which are not capable of properly defending themselves in the air against a credible air-to-air adversary.
Perhaps this is why the F-15C was not deployed to the Syrian conflict, or Afghanistan, or Iraq, that is until now.
ISIS has no air force.
The only reason for Eagles to be in-country, if you will, is because the Russian air force has shown up in numbers, deploying SU-30 air-to-air fighters at their newly constructed Syrian air base at Latakia.

The thought crossed my mind that a shooting war with Russia can be used as a reason to cancel a presidential election.

I REALLY hate Putin.
However, he is taking it to the bad guys (ISIS) in Syria. I believe we should let him. We should take it to ISIS in Iraq and Turkey (yeah, I know.) That makes for a nice clean dividing line of who attacks whom where, without U.S. and Russian forces being in the same airspace ever.
0bama has demonstrated that he’s more interested in being ISIS’s air force (defeating Assad being 0bama’s priority). What should a comparatively (!) reasonable guy like Putin do when he wants to prioritize taking out ISIS? Sheesh. What a damnable mess.

Yes and they are awesome. The F22 is what we would send if we were serious as that is THE air superiority plane.
To me this sounds like politics because Barry famously had the 22 removed from an Airbase appearance as a backdrop for his speech and replaced by...An F15. Since he opposed it as a senator.
Or he is hoping Russia downs the 15s to humiliate us.
Equally stupid as a 15 is still a world above their best.

You’re right everyone seems to forget we don’t have an election we have 51 state elections (includes DC)that occur at the same time. All the guvs would have to agree, not very likely.
Agreed. If they were REALLY expecting an air-to-air fight, you’d think they’d deploy the F-22.
OTOH, our socialist dear leader is all about humiliating the U.S. in front of the rest of the world...
F-15s won’t have very high survivability if they go up against Russian S-400s.
So what if the Russians shoot the F-15s down?
There is nothing conspiratorial about considering whether or not the current occupant of the white house would use ANY excuse to declare martial law and suspend the 2016 elections.
